    Wake On Lan

I've been spending months to sort out my WOL connection. For some reason I have a problem that when the compute has stood for a while the Wake On Lan magic packet doesn't seem to work. I can see the traffic come through the router but I'm not sure whats going on?

    Thanks,
    Ant

    Re: Wake On Lan

Need to know more about your setup tbh - how is your PC connected to your router? What router are you using? Who is your ISP? What NIC/mainboard (inc BIOS revision) in your PC?

    Re: Wake On Lan

    Splash,
Thanks for the reply......My computer is hardwired to the router cable from the router to a hub and then from the hub to my computer. I'm using a Netgear WNR2000v2 for the router with auto DHCP although the mac address of my computer is in the table where it assigns the IP address. The ISP is Virgin Media and the NIC is onboard the motherboard. I've updated my spec which should now have all my computer information.

    Hope you can help,
    Regards,
    Anthony

What are you using to send the magic packet?

    Re: Wake On Lan

if this happens when you try and WOL from the internet in its a known issue with routers, or more to do with the routers not allowing it after a timout for security reasons, if its within the LAN then i have no idea.

WAN side DDRT firmware will be your best option.

    Re: Wake On Lan

Yep it works on the LAN it's just coming through Internet that doesn't work. Although the LAN doesn't work when the computer has been left shut down for 10mins?

    Re: Wake On Lan

Weird I tried it this morning on the network and it booted on the LAN no problem. I think it's when I try to do it over the Internet I have all the problems. What router do you use? I think it's something to do with that?

    Cheers

    Re: Wake On Lan

its well known that routers block the subnet incoming WOL packets, they continue for a few minutes after power off of the pc and then block it, even with the firewall off.

you can try changing your lans subnet as most block the 255.255.255.255 broadcast thats sent if your subnets 255.255.255.0.

changing it to 252.252.252.0 may work.

if you have a isp supplied modem router you may be stuffed.

    Re: Wake On Lan

Rather than sanding the magic packet over the Internet, you could SSH into another computer on the LAN (or the router if it's supported) and use that to send them.

    Re: Wake On Lan

What router supports the wake on LAN function so I cab trigger the signal from that? I can't find one that has the function. I was hoping to be able to leave my computer off and wake it rather than leaving a computer on all the time?

    Thanks

    Re: Wake On Lan

It's pot luck with off-the-shelf routers really, it's not really an advertised feature either so you'd have to see if it's listed in the manual.

My Draytek 2820 has a WOL function in the web interface. I used to use it regularily. The only problem is it only works with computers on the wired interfaces.

I'd already tried the subnet mask change it seems to make no difference. I might just purchase a draytek like yours.
