Using 2nd router as access point - help needed

I have a belkin wireless N300 router as my main router. I also have a spare linksys WRT54GS router, which I'd like to use as an access point. My main router is in an upstairs room, next to the cable modem. I want to setup the access point downstairs (wirelessly), and also be able to plug my blu ray player into the linksys via ethernet.

    Few questions I have:

1: I think I have to plug my linksys router into the belkin one for the initial configuration. If this is the case, I assume you have an ethernet cable out of the belkin and into the linksys, but which port on the linksys - the WAN(internet) port or normal LAN port?

2: How do I access my linksys router config screen, as I assume both routers could possibly try and allocate the same IP address to each other?

3: Once I have both routers plugged in, and I can access my linksys router, what settings (apart from telling it to be a router rather than a gateway - I have linksys own firmware on it so it calls the access point function the "router" option ), are there any other settings I need to change.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Make sure both of them do not run a DHCP server at the same time (your primary router should do the job), you don't need to care about what the default route of the second router is so long as the IP/gateway comes from the primary router as wi-fi works at the link layer (2) rather than IP which layer 3. Statically set the IP of both access points.

Re: Using 2nd router as access point - help needed

Tried setting it up using this guide click me and can't get it to connect to my network. Tried plugging in a laptop to the linksys(via lan) and it try's to aquire a network address for a while, then says it's connected, but still cannot get it to connect to internet.

I've seen some other guides say you need to connect a cat/crossover cable from the main router to the AP (which seems to defeat the point of it being a wireless access point and besides, I am planning to setup the AP in my living room (the main router and modem are in an upstairs room).

    Am I missing something?

if both do not support bridging i dont think you can do it via wireless.

Re: Using 2nd router as access point - help needed

Partly got it working now due to you mentioning the magic word "bridging". None of the other guides had mentioned that you have to change the router setting to client bridge. As soon as I did this, it started working(partly).

It's now working downstairs connected via LAN to my blu ray player. Wireless music players (1 about 5-10 foot away, and 1 in next room) don't seem to be any better though. Still having probs connecting to network.
