    network switches

was looking at one of these but not sure if its the one i need.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/16-po...prosafe-switch

its for more pcs xbox ps3s and nas boxes ect would this do the job or is there one in stock that would be better? needs to be rack mountable tho.

also what is the difference between a switch that is managed and one that is not?

    Re: network switches

A managed switch has an interface be that command line or web page and allows you to configure the switch.

Do you have a rack at home? If not there is no point buying a rack mount switch. How many devices are you looking at connecting?

If its only a few devices and its just for a home network I would go with

yes i have 6 18u boxes full of computers and music gear, as for connections all of them.

what i want to do is when all the PCs are connected to the switch i want to send data over the network to my server, stream audio tracks in to it basically.

    Re: network switches

well im going to get one of these tomorrow and just use it for the net and a nas box or 2.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/netge...t-smart-switch

what sort of network gear would it take to transfer 3gb of data a second over a network?

    Re: network switches

3 Gigabytes or Gigabits? For the latter you could use 10G Ethernet (expensive) or use 1GigE with link aggregation. For the former you'd need something like Infiniband (expensive). What's it for if you don't mind me asking? Also I wouldn't bother with a managed switch unless you know you need/want one.

    Re: network switches

    its the former 3GBs.

i need to get 2-300 audio tracks going at the same time with no latencey at all and at 192khz sample rate.

at 44.1 i can get about 100 tracks going of 1 hdd but if i up it to 192 i get about 10 so i need alot of hdds and a way to get it all in to the server at warp speed.

its like here is 100 blue ray disks watch/record all of them at the same time and don't let 1 go out of sink.

    Re: network switches

You'd need to use something like this and make use of the link aggregation features. Alternatively you may well be better off talking to a vendor focussed on storage and networking and sasking them to spec something to your requirements.

As pointed out elsewhere in this thread - you will not get what you're asking for cheap.

I'm genuinely interested in what you end up with here, you should post a build log of sorts, with photos.

    Re: network switches

that was the first one i looked at tbh and my server might as well cost pennies to that sort of stuff.

i recon its going to cost about 20k to set up something like that with all the storage i want cant believe it cost so much for mass storage like 1pb.

for just storage would this be any good?

    Re: network switches

I suspect you're looking at a chunk more than 20k once you factor in cabling, power protection (generator/ups?), backups (you were going to back this up, right?).

Do yourself a favour - if you're serious about this then speak to a network systems integrator and explain it all to them. We'll be here when you come around from the quote

    Re: network switches

Hold on... what the hell is all this for? Where are you going to locate it? Is this all going to be LAN or WAN?

This sounds nuts! I like it

Also the IOPS needed for this may be pretty high as well. Maybe a RAID 10 Array on a decent NAS or SAN.

    Re: network switches

Have you looked at things like infiniband?

Multi 10Gb is possibly going to be your other way but its going to cost you a lot to shift that kind of data.

I assume the 3GB isn't between multiple source and end points ? Because you are writing data , I cant see cache based SAN's helping much , especially if you are thinking about the pb range of data.

I really can't see you getting any quotes less than 6 figures

    Re: network switches

well i spoke to a few ppl about infiniband and its going to cost more than my house for what i want it to do

as for the switch i had this come today netgear gs724t. yup changed my mind again!

now in the manual it says to set it up with dhcp 1st or static ip address which am i using?

i have a win xp pc on virgin that's connected to a dlink router, is that dhcp or static ip?

    Re: network switches

3 Gigabytes per second is really fast, that 24 Gigabits + overhead per second (when taking networking always use bits not bytes as that is what things are rated in), to get that type of speed you would need 3 aggregated 10Gb ports. If its not point to point you need switches that can handle that data rate, that would max out the switching power of many switches. If it is between two hosts you need equipement able to supply/receive data that fast, which are NOT that common, chipsets have 30-40 lanes on them which are 1 or 2 Gigabits each, the memory interface on a xeon processor is arround 25 Gbps (full duplex). So your state speed 3 gigabytes per second really is pushing current hardware.

    Re: network switches

that's what the ppl i spoke to said and even then they could not guarantee it would do that amount per second.

now i take it with this switch i have I'm using dchp as i just plug in the cat cable from the router to the pc.

i got this switch to play around with networking as i have never done it but im only going to use this switch for basic stuff.

also this things fan makes a bloody row is there any quieter ones i can replace it with?
