    How Do I Network With A Cat5e Cable?

    Hi hope you are well. Sorry for this really silly question but i have brought a cat5 cable and wondered how i get it to work across to my house mates computer.

    I don't want to internet share but just swap files and join lan games. We both have winxp sp1 and onboard Lan.

    I understand there is no need for a router for this cable so any help or direction would be great.

    Sorry to trouble you and thanks for any help.

    Kind regards

    If you're just connecting two computers together (no router or switch) you'll need a crossover cable instead of a normal patch cable (plugs are wired differently)

    Alternatively you may be able to get a crossover adapter.

    Hi, many thanks for your reply.
    I think mine is a cross over cable. I was just wondering how i get it to be reckonised across computers and what kind of settings they should be on and so forth.

    what version of windows are you using.

    I often find that the setup wizard in XP works quite well. Make sure that the work group names are the same though (otherwise they won't recognise each other).

    Newer network cards tend to sense the type of cable you've got plugged in if I remember rightly, so even if you have a patch, not crossover, you might be OK.

    XP - XP networking is pretty easy thanks to the wizard.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    just plug in the cable and then run the wizard, put the XP disk in and go to additional services or something like that and click set up a home network. Then it will guide you through the process. Then run the disk on your mates computer (Same disk, not his disk) and it should be working
