    Newbie network cable question

    Had my home network set up for a while now, but need to run a long cable between rooms and just realised that although I know I need Cat 5 cable, do I need crossover, patch, UTP patch, Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6 etc. etc.

    Anyone give me a simple answer....I'm only looking for about 25meters worth....the routers a Netgear DG834G...

    Is that Cat 5e Patch, Cat 5e Crossover, or Cat 5e Stranded Cable (since I can't see any straight forward Cat 5e at ebuyer)

    Cat5 will do, but if you want extra signal strength over those long distances then yeah ideally Cat5e

    for 100mbit pc -> switch, you need a Category 5 Patch network cable

    5e is better rated, and will theoretically allow 1000mbit with compatible equipment. Category 6 cables use a different connector type, and are rated for 1000mbit. Crossover cables are for connecting one pc directly into another without any switch in the middle only
