my 834N (its a GT with wireless N basically, firmware is nearly identical) has been up since i put the smoothwall in, in November last year. prior to that it was rebooted once a month just to keep it nice and fresh.

I bought a reclaimed DG834GT for about £25 on Ebay, didn't have any problems with stability, then again I didn't have stability issues with the supplied Thompson Bebox either (I stood both of them upright to aid with convection cooling)
Even if it fails every 3 years, I could think of worse ways of spending £25 every 3 years or so.
Not having a Broadcom chipset isn't the end of the world, according to Google searches the Draytek 2710n doesn't use a Broadcom chipset but nothing wrong with stability or connectivity, its possible I am syncing around 0.5Mbps to 1Mbps less compared to the DG834GT but out of 18-20Mbps sync that isn't much to cry about.
Household has 4 PCs in use with 2 wifi phones and wifi PS3, so routers are worked on fairly heavily.

i have a Netgear DG834GT and whilst its better then the bebox, i have to reboot it at least once a bloody day as every time i come home from work, one of my machines has "limited access to the internet"
annoying.

Well, I've ordered one. Wanted to get it resolved as quickly as possible, and it was only £25.
I have a friend who is good with electronics - Smargh do you have any sort of detailed instructions for changing the capacitors and power supply?
I re-capped my DG834G v4 here, there are a ton of guides and tutorials on youtube for replacing caps.

why would u wanna do that in the first place?

The 834G v4 and 834GT are amongst the best ADSL routers for the price range, the capacitors which in my opinion are the 834s weakest point are inexpensive to replace; it’s a £5 - 30 minute job. I had performed the re-cap on my 834G about two years ago and it has been running great since.
Of course there are other options but again; for the money and effort it’s worth it.

Just set MTU to 1500, though I actually ran MTU at 1442 or so for around 18months now, switched to 1500 recently, no difference that I can see :S
