    Halls Internet

I was intending to use a wireless router in halls.

The halls terms of service state that a £130 fine will be imposed if someone is found to use one.

Do they search through mac adresses of devices plugged in to detect a router? or walk around with a laptop scanning?

are these penalties often just to deter people and they don't bother checking?

Basically.. I want to be able to use my laptop, phone and ps3 on the internet at the same time!

Why don't you speak to them and ask if you can do that. Polite sometimes work (but not always of course). Maybe they would allow a wired router.

Don't use a router, just use connectify when you need to connect the other devices.

What halls do you want to be in?

Well they are pretty strict at Manchester. I wouldn't advise using a Wireless router. My friend got banned from Hornet for about 6 months and got a large fine, for just running a Counterstrike Source server.

I'm not that hot when it comes to networking, but if you use a router I think they can tell you have multiple devices connected.

    Re: Halls Internet

I am having trouble with connectify.

The first time I ran it, it installed a wan port or something. But when I run it now, it doesn't find an internet connection to share. and when I reinstall the program as advised, it says it "can't find specified file".

    any ideas?

none of the help on their website is of any help...

    Re: Halls Internet

lol back at uni I ended up helping to tweak some of the managed switch settings for the network bods, they were all pretty decent guys!

If they don't want you doing it, well you might want to consider not doing it. If your having to ask on a forum here how they would go about trying to detect it, so they could stop it, then your going to be in a world of trouble.

First question would be could you put a switch on so you can use both PCs?

Then you might want to ask if its OK to use a secured WPA/TSKP2 mac filtered, no public broadcasting access point!

If they say no, complain via the student ways, get a job with your paper, get some signatures
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

The whole reason for not using a switch is, because they will only allow 1 mac adress directly connected. yes I know I can set pc to ps3 mac... but I want to be able to use both at the same time, and phone on wifi.

I cannot get anywhere with connectify! even after reinstalling

Connectify only works with Windows 7 and if you have a compatible wireless card. If those criteria are met, try rebooting.

If you can't get Connectify to work you're going to have to suck it up and deal with just one wired connection I'm afraid.

I have both of those. Windows 7 Ultimate and Intel WiFi Link 5100.

get an old PC or mini-itx board and run m0n0wall... Would also make it quite hard to detect.

It's their network - have you asked why they run it in this manner? Being up front may well get you some leway whereas sneaking around and trying to circumvent will likely just get you kicked off.

Well generally halls offer a wireless service of their own so ban people from using wireless routers saying that it might disrupt the users of halls wireless service, theres also the problem of sharing your connection between rooms because theres ample bandwidth to do so and means people aren't paying. Simplest solution is a ethernet router or cough up for their wireless.

    Re: Halls Internet

Working in a uni myself, the problem is the connections are normally supplied through JANET so the uni and therefore staff and students are all bound to the T&C's of the JANET service. Obviously the uni pays for the bandwidth used through the service and a wifi router the uni is probably covering itself as they charge students for wifi access in the halls. One student could apply for it and others chip in and you share the one connection hence the uni is then in breach of the JANET regs, also the poor student who's name is on the record for the connection and others do anything they shouldn't they get away scott free and you being the connection owner get all the flack.

This will be different for every uni, but might be worth checking the agreement they would of made you sign, or the computer use agreement when you joined the uni, should outline what you can and cannot do

Although the Uni is the middle man and getting most the blame for the tight rules, they are probably having to fulfil the agreement they have with the likes of JANET etc. As said though, I would advise being up front about it, ask them why you can't do it if it's not covered in the agreement when you moved into halls. Last thing you want to do is the uni to collar you about it or find you in breach of the T&C's for halls and connections and kick you out (it's been known to happen)
