Disable internet but allow phone connection?

    Hi Guys,

I need to mount a phone socket on a wall, but without internet capability.

It's a BT line so normally i'd have to use a filter. However, I'd quite like a phone socket that prevents others using a filter and gaining access to the internet (shared house) but allows phone use.

Any ideas how I could achieve that?

Also, what would happen if two routers were plugged into different sockets?

My router is plugged into a BT openreach box (via a filter) and the second phone socket is wired up from there. Essentially they have the same incoming line, but it splits into two boxes.

    Thank you for your advice

The only way of truely disabling the internet and not needing a splitter at the other end is to have that extension running off the phone part of the splitter.

Hmmm, that isn't exactly the solution I was hoping for. However, if there really is no other way to do it then I guess I'll have to live with it. Thank you.

you can get closed faceplates (normally for CCTV) to stop people being able to remove what ever is plugged into it.

This will stop them plugging in a dialup modem etc.

If you already have a router plugged in then if someone else tried to do the same wouldn't they be unable to (ie the 2nd router couldn't connect to anything?)

What would the setup be though? I want to be able to plug in and remove a phone, but not a router. How would a closed faceplate help?

I don't know... might depend on the ISP.

If 2 routers are plugged into the same line, they will fight for the connection. Chances are neither will get one and you'll find them bombing out every few seconds.

So it's all or nothing? I guess that's going to have to be good enough...

If there was a technological reason, there would be no problem because I just wouldn't plug a router in

    hold on I am confused

I thought you wanted a phone plugged into a telephone socket but not allow a modem to be plugged in. Is this extension of another line or is this a dedicated line.

By modem do you mean ADSL modem or dial up modem? Is ADSL activated on the line?

Re: Disable internet but allow phone connection?

    Sorry for the confusion.

It's an ADSL line that, with a filter, can provide both internet and phone. The socket I'm dealing with is an extension from the main open reach box (the only open reach box). It's extended using 4 core wiring (not a simple phone line extension).

    My Aim:
I want to remove the internet functionality from the box. I would still like to use the phone, but no internet access is to be allowed.

I'm talking about a modem router - broadband. (Dial up? )

Re: Disable internet but allow phone connection?

It would seem you have no control of what gets connected to the other socket , and no way of influencing whoever may connect a device to said socket ? If they want internet access , why not invest in a wireless router and share the connection that way or are you not wanting to share ?

Re: Disable internet but allow phone connection?

The phone needs to be always plugged in.

    It's nothing sinister

I pay for the internet for our shared flat and everybody else pays me. One of the guys has decided he no longer wants to pay - no money, no internet - sound fair?

Re: Disable internet but allow phone connection?

If there is already a router on the line then he would need to get your ISP details, setup a second router and it would then cause an issue at the ISP end. The ISP would detect that 2 logins are attempted to the RADIUS server and kick you both off.

Like I said you can get a tamper proof socket and plug the phone in he can't remove the phone from the socket to plug anything else in.

Re: Disable internet but allow phone connection?

Ok, that's good. As for the tamper socket... I'll still need a filter though so although they won't be able to remove the filter, they could still plug a router in...right?
