Virgin media 50mb - super slow in evening.

Just decided to open a thread on virgin media support forum after onlive yet again was unusable in the evening,

my tests etc for the post showed I am getting on average 6- 8mb (paying for 50mb) and getting a grade c/b connection on pingtest.net with no packet loss. The modem is showing critical issues constantly but from being with VM for a while I think this is considered 'normal'.

During the day honestly I have no issues, but evening i.e. 5/6 - 11 ish, the connection is so slow, I can't watch BBC Iplayer or youtube, it just won't stream, and actually says its lost connection, Onlive also complains of a lost connection on a regular basis, today was completely unplayable though.

Honestly for £35 a month, you expect a decent connection and at the very least most of the speed you pay for not between 10% and 20% of it, very shocking, currently stuck with VM as house mate has contract until Jan, but once thats done, will be moving away to 02 or be.

Good luck. Last time I contacted them, I spent 2 hours on the phone, only to be told that I "must have spyware" and then was disconnected when I disagreed.

Re: Virgin media 50mb - super slow in evening.

I'll never use Virgin Media again in my life. I had exactly that problem, Except I was on the 20mb Package at £37 a month and the best speed I got was 13mb. Mostly it was about 2-5mb and that was when it was actually working as they had regular outages in this area.

Their support was terrible. When I called to report a outage in the area, Their Support tech in India told me it was caused by viruses or spyware on my PC - which was causing the whole street to be without internet.

I'm currently on Be and been very happy with it since 2007 - Rock solid 8.6mb day and night 365 days a year.

Re: Virgin media 50mb - super slow in evening.

I have 10Mb/s, having been upgraded over the years. The connection is worse now than when I had 2Mb/s. The problem seems to be with latency, though my speed is slow too. Oddly, speedtest.net does not agree with my readings with other tools.
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

Re: Virgin media 50mb - super slow in evening.

If you can manage to get through to the British support staff they're great. The indians seem to have a script they have to stick to and it's very difficult to make them understand anything that deviates from the standard problems.
I wanted to talk to someone about the NNTP traffic shaping and I had to go through 3 different departments before I found anyone who even knew what NNTP was.
I'm sure all these problems are down to traffic shaping. I can record a solid 10Mb connection speed on Speedtest.net but BBC iPlayer and other streaming video runs appallingly badly.

    And we have a winner!

I used to get about 0.5Mbps from my 20Mbps connection.

I was getting 10Mbps on the speedtest.net site on my 50Mb connection so I can confirm that it isn't always the answer.

Ive logged in just to rant I'm so at Virgin media

I have a 20meg connection and im having exactly the same problem as you, daytime is great then from 6pm - 10pm at night the connection is shocking, this is the only time i get to use it.

I have phoned up and complained only to be told by the Indian call centre that because i have my own router that must be the reason I have a slow network connection (perhaps my computer is not internet ready). It eventually got to the point where any time i was at home the connection was useless so i posted on the forums and found out that the router was oversubsribed, no apology they didnt even reply that they just that it was over subscribed. They eventually agreed to upgrade the router in June / July.

A friday afternoon trying to work from home the connection was completely unuseable and the Virgin Media team didnt care at all, infact i found them rude and obstructive. I posted annoyed (bit of rant post on their, inc the names of the people i'd spoken to) and they deleted it telling me I should be nice and that I had to ASK FOR HELP! and that i shouldnt be pm the mods. I pay for service which Im not getting and the customer service / technical help are rude and obstructive.

Same story this week. I'm going to write a email to their CEO and potentially take them to offcom / trading standards & small claims court as I want my money back.

Hence why I said "isn't always".

Either way, the fact that speedtest was giving crap speeds didn't convince Virgin to be any more helpful than others are reporting, so it's not worth worrying about. Whatever happens you're on your own.

    Face facts.

Your 50mb connection mean 50mb to their hub, not out onto the internet.

If you want a real 50mb connection, you will have to pay for it, which will be considerable more than £35 PM.

Might be a utilisation issue mate, I can check that at work with your mac address, feel free to PM me with it, on a side note, pingtest has been found to have spyware on it recently, be careful on it.

Are you even reading the thread?

I get about 40Mbps on my 50Mbps, which is fine.

10Mbps on the other hand is not.
