    Recommend Me A Router

I need a new router, so i would like recommendations from you guys in the know. Has to be compatible with Blueyonder Telewest broadband, and have at least 4 ports and be of a good quality, able to withstand constant full usage. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Oh yea, wired too.....have no wireless parts and dont want to pay for wireless network cards

How soon do you need it??

I've got a wired Netgear DG814 going spare at the end of july.
4port switch, modem and router all in one plus 2x patch cables.

Never ever had a problem with it, and was on constantly while I was at uni (Can't do that here.. leccy too expensive!)

OOh... just noticed about the cable thing... this one isn't compatible with cable... if you're on ADSL however, its brill...

    (apologies for relative noobness.)

There are alot of cheap and pretty good D-Link routers. Like:

The really cheap one: D-Link DI-604 Internet Gateway and 4-port 10/100 Switch.
    A little bit more expencive: D-Link DI-704P Internet Gateway, 1xWAN, 4x 10/100Mbps switch, 1xprinter, Firewall.
    A little bit more expencive: D-Link DI-804V Internet Gateway, 1xWAN, 4x 10/100Mbps switch, Firewall.
    And the greatest of them all: D-Link DSL-604+/TA ADSL-router 4-port Switch 10/100Mbps 802.11b 22Mbps Wireless Access Point + splitter

That's what I have to recommend.

Avoid the D-Link, the Linksys is miles better, just as cheap, but Linksys actually have customer service and update the firmware more than once in a blue moon..
On a more techinal level the Linksys is also superior with a full true firewall rather than just the iptables derivative of the D-Link
    (I've got the DSL 604+)

It depends on how much you're willing to pay. You can get some cheap ones that are quite good. I would say D-link (look at the routers wberg suggested). I've got an D-link router which I think is good, and it's been working proprerly in a couple of years now! .

    Good Luck!

I have the D-Link 604, thats the one that is constantly giving port 1 disconnects. Then, it will lock the internet all together until i unplug it, and plug it back in. It may sound like nothing, but imagine that happening 5 times in 25mins....a pain in the backside! Do all 604's run HOT by the way?

I was looking at the Linksys earlier, on ebuyer also Stoo, but wasnt 100% whether its the one for me. I have set £100 aside for this, as it needs to be quality this time, not price.

I've heard very good things about D-link router and hubs, so i think i may buy a more pricey, better D-Link tbh.

Linksys is a decent brand chap, they're basically cheap cisco's

Oh and yes, my 604+ gets stupidly hot..

re:lockups, did you disable UPNP and DNS Proxy yet?

Anything much over £60 is a bit of a waste on a standard non-wireless non adsl router (unless you're going for a full blown nuts out cisco - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=49719) they're cheaper because they don't have all the adsl and wireless gubbins..

There isn't such a thing as a better, pricier D-Link btw, you just bolt more stuff on, like more ports, wireless, vpn, adsl etc etc (same with most of the others too), if you don't need wlan, vpn, and adsl/dial up features, then it's silly to pay the extra if you're never going to use them

Phew, it's not just me then

Nice router though. Was absolute newby when bought. Tried the US Robotics sureconnect 9003 first ended up with this one. Very happy, dont use it wireless at mo, but I know I got that option when I got time and money. Get's my vote!

If you open the router up you can see a cardbus pcmcia card that provides the wireless function, it's that bugger that gets stupidly hot, and cleverly, they've placed it on the underside of the router where there's the least air-flow

How long before someone whacks a blue LED fan in?

well, sticking a fan in might be a good idea if there was anywhere for it to go lol
