I may infact look at getting virgin installed when I am living now as I cannot put with the slow 8 Mb sky connection thats installed as at night-time it comes practically unusable.
i read that virgin's real "up to" speeds are actually 10% faster than what they advertise, so up to 10mb is really up to 11mb, then up to 22mb, up to 33mb, up to 55mb and up to 110mb. i'm on the XL up to 30mb package and get pretty much 33mb

the reason for this was mentioned as in order to advertise "up to" speeds, there is a certain criteria to match which means a certain percentage of people have to get the advertised speeds or be within 10% of them or something, so they give a little bit more than they say so they fulfill the criteria for advertising and most people get the speeds mentioned - or even faster

so on that basis, the new speeds will be 66mb and 132mb if they continue the same way (with others effectively jumping up a tier)

i just upgraded from 10mb to 30mb early last year, which was a great improvement for next to no extra money, so to get 60-66mb speeds for the same money as i was paying for 10mb literally about 2 years previously is pretty fantastic, 6.5 times the speed for a few pennies more, plus increased STM limits that currently mean i rarely reach them, or if i do these days the end speed is about 8mb so not far off the speed i was on previously

The joke is the "up to".

With ADSL it's needed as distance to exchange means everything......with fibre, the only reason to use "up to" is because you know your network cannot handle the data your stuffing down it.

Yeah, but for an extra £5 a month, you'll get 60Mbps... I'm quite tempted myself...

Re: Virgin doubling their speeds again.

I'm on a 20Mb package in Leicester with Virgin, main reason i've not gone to 30 is the "one off fee" for them sending me a hub that from other comments I probably don't want.

I will be interested to see the new pricing and speeds - hope i can keep my current equipment and get the speed increase ? Fingers crossed.

you can't, normal modems such as the Scientific Atlanta 2100, Ambits 200,250,256 and the Motorola 5100,5101E (and a few others that are dated) can only do a max of 25Mb, as they only take one downstream connection. An Ambit 300 or Netgear 480(superhub) is needed in order to use more than one downstream (4 on the former, 8 on the latter).

So, basically you will get a superhub. As always I recommend modem mode with separate router for these, but the wireless can be decent with a few changes to the settings, not great, but decent.

    Great news

We went from 4mb to 10mb for free, so will be 10 to 20. More than enough.

This could be good news my contract with talktalk is about to run out, and both talk talk and virgin are doing half price deals till february Loads of gaming and downloading to be done.

Another stupid question, while im here. If my sisters downloading on another computer on the network and shes connected locally and im wireless, will she get the better speeds?

Re: Virgin doubling their speeds again.

I think this is a really good thing for current users. It shows they have a little confidence in their network to be able to handle it. I've been with virgin since the days of cable and wireless and it's really only got better and better. Sure I've had issues, who hasn't, but for the vast majority of the time it's been perfect. I would like to see then do away with the traffic management nonsense or perhaps limit it to just torrents our at the very least make it a little more lenient.

When there are a plethora of VM users with capacity issues?

It's not confidence at all. It's 100% marketing and the cost of changing all their advertising/branding which currently revolves around "UKs fastest broadband supplier".

They are putting speeds up because of the BT Infinity rollout.

I've done this same as other people here and kept it at 20mb as its fast enough and solid. It was a massive move from the 10mb packet I originally had.
