Re: FTTC Packages for heavy downloaders?

Hmmm... Am on BT Infinity... Got nothing to complain at the mo.
    I got upto 4MB/s download.

I heard plusnet is doing FTTC trail...

I have left Be* too, they don't do FTTC at the mo.. I find it very strange, as they are own by Telefonica... A big Spanish Teleco.

Re: FTTC Packages for heavy downloaders?

I'm with VM and unless you are on the XXL package its a plusnet situation i.e. big downloads are an overnight job (9pm onwards). I'm just on the basic package and its alright for my needs most of the time but if I download over something like 3.5Gb at peak (1.5Gb at some times of the day I believe? not checked for a while), it can get restricitive. One saturday afternoon I downloaded a linux distro and my girlfriend watched something on the iPlayer on my TV and that was it 75% speed cut and that lasted probably most of the rest of the day (5 hours?)

You really have to play the game with VMs packages.

Generally I've not had problems with them in terms of customer services and if its a problem with the Indian call centres that people have the best thing you can do is ring the number you would if you were leaving VM and you get a call centre in the UK (little tip from my manager that one)

Out of interest, what are you doing to need a massive allowance? A friend of mine is a freelance web desinger/ developer and has a server some of his clients use, he is on BT infinity and doesn't seem to be havign any issues with his usage and he gets through a lot! I can ask him what package he is on if that is helpful?

Thanks for pointing this out!!! I was considering a change to Virgin, but now im thinking I'll just hang on until FTTC is available in my area.

Basically on all services you pay x amount for a 50% service. I was thinking of HD movie/catch up streaming but I'll can that for now.

For me it's two big show-stoppers:

    1. They take a year or more to fix contension issues when they over-subscribe. I have now seen this happen to 7/9 people I know who have (had) VM. There is absolutely no way I am giving money to a company with such a track record.....let alone sign my rights away for 12 months!

    2. Indian call centres. Nuff said.

Out of interest, what are you doing to need a massive allowance?
Because I download and stream a lot......I stream anything from 10-30GB per month......on top of that I download every game I purchase - plus trials - and then there are game patches, WSUS syncs etc.

Streaming and game downloads/patches are two activities that I cannot schedule to placate ISPs......hence my reluctance to go with anyone who charges for going over caps.

No thanks.....BT are just as evil as Virgin....they are both on my "Never" list....Plus the new connection is already ordered

I had the repeated impression some time ago that BE/O2 was at the mercy of Telefónica - with that being the source of the heel-dragging after the initial talk of upgrade plans (or proposals). If I my memory's not letting me down, it all came to a halt late last year.

It's sadly unsurprising with any company that you'd receive a standardised line as a supposed reply. It can't feel good for the people on the other end of the phone that have to repeat the same things time after time every day. The quotes from the managing director didn't seem that much different - but what can any of them do when the real knowledge and control rests elsewhere (i.e. with the parent company)?
