    Legality of Internet Sharing

Currently, i get my broadband internet through NTL, and use a wireless router for my house connections. guy who lives next door has just bought a laptop and set up e-mail etc, i'm letting him use my wireless internet connection as all he does is check e-mails and browse the odd site now and again, no massive downloads so its not like he's chewing up my bandwidth.

I've checked my NTL contract and it dosen't mention anything about this, is what i'm doing legal or not??

I wouldnt think so as theoretically the connection is still inside your house . Who would possible know anyway?

It's not illegal, but it might be against the terms of your ntl contract.

However, they have no way of finding out, so I wouldn't worry.

I'm pretty sure many ISP's including NTL know people do this and turn a blind eye to sharing and multiple connections through routers etc, but they do state that if you do this they will not give any support if there is an issue with the connection as it might be caused by the "sharing" and not their network/hardware etc.

Point taken but u would hope that anyone who has enough knowhow or knowledge to do the whole sharing thing, would alos be clever enough that if they get a probem, to revert to the original setup before calling the support people and deny all knowledge of sharing.

As a point of note - Blueyonder spent about an hour on the fone with me whilst i was trying to sort out a wireless router issue - they knew i had wireless router conencted and didnt seem to care - just wanted to help fix my problem!

    Kudos to BY

When I was on BTO adsl back in the early days of 1999 I replaced the "frog" with a router. Now BTO had a DNS outage and their deadful poxy proxy died on its arse to be blunt - a call to their support desk was called for. When asked to reinstall the frog I laughed at them ( I tried with the USB modem several times before I rang them due to no access ) and basically they would not help me until I removed my router and inserted the lovely alca-hell ADSL modem that caused by VIA chipset'ed system to reboot if I downloaded over 45 Kb/s.

Now ISP's are more clued up about the various hardware configurations, and I have heard a few of the techies @ BY know their stuff about routers etc from friends and various other websites

ntl's terms of service state that you are allowed a maximum of three computers connected at once to your ntl connection, however i don't remember seeing anything about these computers having to be on your property.
it's nonsense though, because it would be extremely difficult them to find out if you were breaking this rule.

I remember when reading the NTL contract stuff that it was illegal to
resell... so if you charged your neighbour money you would be breaking the contract.

But they cant tell anyway so dont worry about it..

Anyone heard when NTL will put up the download speeds?

I wish NTL would put up the upload speeds though.
