    Wireless lan encryption?

Today my Dlink DWL-2000AP+ wireless access point arrived, I plugged it into my Netgear 834 router and followed the instructions, all seems to be working, the laptop can get a net connection fine, however when I turn on encryption I loose the connection, Ive checked the keys are fine and moving the laptop away from the access point shows a drop in signal strenth at the laptop side so it must be betecting the access point?
So any idea how I can encrypt the wireless lan? dont like the idea that any pikey can steal my bandwith

OK, what wireless adapter are you connecting to it with? And what strength encryption are you trying to use? The AP may support up to 256-bit WEP out of the box, but does your adapter? Try lower levels first - start at 64, if that works try 128 (both these'll probably be supported). Are they authenticating in the same mode, i.e. both using shared key or whichever? Are you actually losing the wireless connection, or is that still there, but you just can't browse, pick up mail or whatever?

Check first if you actaully need encryption... I took my laptop for a short walk outside and i couldnt get to google after 3 metres..So theres no real point for encryption for me. encryption just slows everything down be design anyway so i dont like it that much =)
