    Wireless B or G?

    Hi All,

I'm sending back a Wireless G card cos it was cack, so i should be getting £40 put back in my pocket.

The question is, is G worth it? All its doing is picking up a 1Mb ADSL line, and sharing the odd file. Possibly some lan gaming too.

Shall i save myself £20 and just buy a B card?

    TIA!

There shouldn't be a £20 difference between B and G, shop around more

G is definitely worth having over B.

Aye, what Caged said, G is far superior to B.

Having the 54Mbs would also do you a favour with LAN gaming, 11mbs would only be in the best of situations so you might notice a weeny bit of lag.

G all the way and the card will probably be compatible with B aswell, so you get a good deal with a G card

I agree - after suffering with B for so long - I'm just looking for justification to upgrade to g - preferably something which I can fit with a long range antenna!

How come G is faster though? Surely if the line is 1mb then 11mb/s is overkill anyway!

Why would having 54 make any difference?

Seriously I have no idea, I'm new to this, just wondering.

He wants to share files as well, and G is a lot better suited to this.

With any wireless kit, the specified speed is their supposed optimum. That means the antennas are pretty much touch each other there is nothing blocking them etc. When you seperate PC's (which is the point of wireless) the speed drops.

He may just end up with something like 30kbp/s if there are walls and other stuff, and that wont keep up with his line.

G has more power so the speed wont drop as dramatically.

    Sorted

totally agreed, if that's what he wants to do, then G is going to be for him, over B

thanks guys, went and bought a nice shiny new Linksys G card and it's happily WEP-ing away at 54Mbps
(thats the actual reported speed which surprised me as i was expecting to see a little drop off to maybe 40-45Mbps. Oh well no complaints )

would dish out some rep points if i could!
