    No, the Data Extension Kit that BT will install (if you so wish) is just like a normal phone extension kit but it's data-only (so it is a cable with small white box on the end that you plug the modem into).

    Doing it that way means no work at all is needed by you other than routing the cable how you want it - and if it's only along skirting, around doors (i.e. an external cable run) then the engineer will do that for you too.

    The modem will plug straight into this BT-provided data extension socket and you still have the BT master socket so you can effectively choose which one to use for your modem (and test if there is any detectable difference in speed as Biscuit says (FYI, for me there is not)).
