    B0FH,

Right, hope you can see our concerns regarding WHY you wanted access etc and I hope you can see that it did sound a bit dodgy...

Anyway, the advice given here is all sound... get your mate to hit the hardware reset button, it'll set everything back to default and you should be able to go from there. ALL manufacturers manuals can be found online, as you know, (sorry if I'm teaching grannies to suck eggs here ) so you should be able to get it going.

And yes, I totally understand about the ego thing, it does become a matter of pride to get a conclusion one way or the other... many a night been spent up untilt he wee hours trying to get something to work right...

B0FH: Can you get round there and have a look at it and try to identify the model?

also, is there any chance of your mate contacting the person he bought the router from to ask them what the settings were..

(If the router was previously used on a static IP setup then you've got next to no chance of identifying the ip addy..)

Personally i dont believe you and think youre trying to hack a neighbours network.

I havent seen many wifi routers without any identifying marks on.... infact i havent
seen any. Take a picture of it and link to it then someone can say what it is.

I think this has gone about as far as I'm happy to take it.

Just to let you know the router problem is now sorted - after all the searching on google etc for the manufacturer via MAC address, i gave up and asked my cusiun (a man cleverer than most!) and he ID'd it as a netgear jobby. He then fixed it by flashing the firmware (Apparently the probable cause was an incomplete flash last time, meaning the wireless worked but the routing didn't).

Many thanks for all that triedto help, and next time i'll try and have a less flame-inducing problem
