    Talking VPN Wonderfulness

In a meeting in Nuremburg this morn, accesing files from my PC in the UK & able to surf the net (albeit sluggishly). Never done it before, but was asked by Smed (IT guru) to give it a wizz. No more need to carry around wads of drawings in case I forget one

    I hear ya

Until last year I'd only ever used a 3rd-party VPN client to establish a secure tunnel with a firewall, then launch specific apps such as desktop remote control or a browser to access internal resources.

Now I can sit in bed (like now ) with a wireless 54Mbps connection to a router in my living room hooked up to a 100Mbps Internet connection and securely logon to our network to check mail and access internal resources.
Handy while I'm on holiday in California but have some online training courses to complete over the next 6 weeks
~ I have CDO. It's like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order, as they should be. ~

VPN's are ok - I've done most levels of VPN , from a sinlge pptp based one , to IPSEC VPN based WAN infrastructures to SecureID LDAP/ACE server with smartcard authentication

I'm not a big fan of moving files over a VPN - you'll find it quicker to have a TS connection or other form of remote control and wrap it up in a nice secured VPN. (browsing remote file servers can be a mare )

VPNs definately do rock, except when you're doing h/w VPNs to different manufacturers kit - can be a pain sometimes as their support regularly suggest you change it to the same kit at both ends - can't always do that though.

this is true - site to site ones always work better with same vendor at each end

its one of those cases where the standard isn't that standard....

My work's VPN's great - it's actually faster at home over 1MB BB than it is in the office! (Perhaps that just says something about our office network?)
