    Wireless routers question

    Hi,

Ive currently got a wired setup, its a 4 port wired router/modem combo, so it does all I need, BUT, I want to add a wireless laptop to it

Now, I need to keep my wires, so with thr 2 free remaining ports I really need a WAP

However, someones offered me a 4 port wireless router with a ethernet uplink,

Is it possible to do this? Connect the 2 routers together so all channels go thru the modem, giving me 3 wired ports, and 4 wireless ports?

You can do it if you configure the Wireless router as an AP ie turn off all the routing functions. However there is always a chance that the hardware will not be compatable.

Should be no problem if both devices are presumably NAT'ing, act as DHCP servers and work with different subnets.

I use this setup at home for my wired/wireless router - it has a private LAN of 192.168.x.x and gets its "dirty" address from another DHCP server (mine happens to be a Windows 2003 Server but another router works just as well) - the dirty side address is another internal network used for gigabit-speed clients on a 10.x.x.x network - and this NAT's out to the real world.

Clients just get NAT'd twice to reach the outside world, and I can even VPN through it.
Origially I was hoping to do as Hottentot mentioned, by disabling the routing functions of the device, but it does not support it (or DHCP relay).

My setup is here - the green network (bottom right) shows the 192.168.x.x network, which is NAT'd onto the blue network (10.x.x.x) which is NAT'd to the Internet (red network) using the server in the top left.

(btw "AP" = "(wireless) Access Point")

I'm confused as to why its not working

I've got it set up as the pic shows above, the internet from my router/adsl works, but from the wireless box it wont

my wireless card has no problem connecting to the router, i can configure it wirelessly, and have configured the hell out of it to no luck. If it helps, I jacked into my neighbours network by accident and the net worked fine, so its not my card or computer settings that are bad.

so its some sort of setting i need to change to allow the router to connect via the ethernet uplink ? ive set them both as DHCP with different subnet masks to no avail

also how do i set up security, if you cant tell, im pretty new to this wireless malarky, and it was stupidly easy to get onto my neighbours connection (clicked connect, and she-bang i was on ) so i'd like to secure it if i can
