Sygate pro is head and shoulders above the rest. The free non-pro personal firewall is also a good product.

It's a great product because it has a low CPU hit is totally reliable and comes with a great reverse DNS lookup and an easy to configure rules base for blocking unwanted intruders.

I also like PC-Cillin and Norton but thought that ZA , Bullguard and IpCop (?) had too big a hit on CPU especially when in a peer to peer environment.

Norton's antivirus software is excellent. Unfortunately the firewall is not so much so

An article from PCFlank testing 13 of the more popular software firewalls titled Personal Firewalls vs. Leak Tests: Part II: "Leak Tests Win Again!".

Being a SygatePro user, the results were quite alarming.

i used SPF, since ZoneAlarm's free version blocks all CIFS traffic (rendering a network useless)

Thats a great read, I've just downloaded the Outpost Firewall 2.0 PRO 1 Month Trial and it is as good as it says. I'm going to move to this from my ZoneAlarm free version at home.

The detail available on what is going on with your machine is SUPERB!!!.

are any of those easily deployable ?

I've got a largeish number of laptops I'd like to deploy a software firewall to.

basically they are remote users who hook the system up to their remote DSL lines which isnt' ideal.

I want it to just work without any form of user intrusion.

GPO will deploy any exe if you create a .zap file.

    Dunno about configuring it though!
