Smoothwall - Linux based, runs on an old P233mmx machine.
Runs 24/7, also works as DHCP etc
ZoneAlarm Pro

It's so much more secure than the XP Firewall.

NIS at the moment but have setup an old P166MMX to run Smoothwall when ADSL arrives....
I use ZA, I have a linux box that will perform firewall duties when I have enough network cards for it but you still need a firewall on each PC to manage outbound connections.
has to be said, ZA is free, does the job and its nee botha
HEXUS FOLDING TEAM It's EASY
Zone Alarm.
All these people running a firewall in an old linux box, isnt this essentially a hardware firewall, afterall a hardware firewall box has software/firmware in it.
I do like the idea of getting an old box for firewall dutys tho.
A smoothwall box *is* an application device/hardware firewall , although it doesn't controll data flowing out of it.
using a smoothwall as a NAT device, in conjunction with somethign like Zonealarm so you can actually see what process are trying to make external connections is probably the most secure way to go unless you want to spend a h00000000000000000000000000ge ammountof cash some somethign like checkpoint firewall which will run on NT or UNIX

I'd use Sygate Personal Firewall however, it's much better than ZA, and it's free for non-commercial use
Sygate is a no-nosense app. ZA is an overbloated firewall that's looks like it's made out of lego. Presumably they are going after the newbie market where half the customers don't know what a firewall is, they've just been told that they need one.
Sygate personal frewall here to
Very easy to use and it seems to be doing a good job of protecting the machine- touch wood
ZA rocks
Anyone have opinions about IPCop? It has been getting a lot more downloads than Smoothwall lately.
One thing to note, everyone should read the intro to Smoothwall documentation. It gives a great description of how to ask for help if you need it and how to get good answers from OSDN people.
Hope this helps
not tried it - it seems a little more configurable than smoothwall though.
if its plugins you want , then clark connect rules

If I close or disable ZA Pro and go to command prompt > netstat I see all sorts of wierd connections from other NTL Broadband users, mostlikely this MSBlast business, and a few other wierd ones.
/me fluffles ZoneAlarm

A site that'll help you with your choice PCFlank.
Highly recommended Agnitum's Outpost. Personally, I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro.
