Simple, reliable, wireless ADSL router ?

Need to recommend a reliable, easy to set up, easy to maintain wi-fi router. Doesn't need to be the fastest thing on the market as he'll be on UK ADSL afer all. So B or G.

I have a Linksys myself but it has been hassle at times to set up reliably so i hope theres something better for him/. thanks for any help

Netgear DG834G. Fantastic router, you can even buy the "superfast" G version now. Mine is completely maintenance free and has plenty of security features.
[edit]Know what you mean about linksys, I have 3 of their wireless network cards and they're absolutely atrocious.[/edit]

Aye, I got that one for my dad and it handles an internet radio station audio feed 24/7. My router seems to crash when the weather gets hot

Ha I completely agree on the linksys cards too, the connector of the aerial came off on mine, and now its completely haywire.

My netgear (WGT624 v2 or something) botched right up, random router reboots, over and over, sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes as soon as it had finished rebooting before that. Spoke to Netgear on the phone for some time and they came to the conclusion that "its shagged" (they didn't quite use those words ) if a firmware update/rollback + hardware reset didnt work.

Previous to that the signal on the compatible WGT113T (or something) 108mbps pci NIC was awful, across the landing and it would drop out.

I had ready many great reviews of the Linksys WRT54G(or GS), and the firmware community for several linksys products is great. I pay a monthly subscription for the modified Sveasoft firmware (www.sveasoft.com) which boosts wireless signals, adds many more features and has great support forums. I would recommend Linksys to anyone, and currently own a WRT54GS, 2 x WMP54GS NICs and WUSB54G USB NIC Never looked back.

I can thoroughly recommend the SpeedTouch 580. It supports all the features you are likely to need and it supports adsl2.

I have used SpeedTouch products for a while now and my last Router ( a 510 v4 ) stayed connected with out a single hiccup for over 8 months.

I have been using the 580 now for 3 months and it is every bit as stable as the the 510....it simply does it's job and you forget it's there

Edit : It basically sets itself up You just enter your username and password and your done.

What are the security features like?

I forgot to mention he'll need some standard wi-fi security

i dont think you can beat the linksys wrt54g router and an adsl ethernet modem with that router having open source firmware any bugs or improvments that can be made are done very quickly by thrid parties. there really are some good firmwares around for it now. though its quite expensive compared to other routers.

the netgear 834gt seems pretty good, the router i currently have. first one died on me after a couple of month, just went completly dead. but was under warentee and got another one the same, no problems so far.

word of warning though stay WELL CLEAR of d-link, their routers have way too many problems, with bad firmware or overheating.

    Go go gadget netgear

I have had many issues with speedtouch modems at work, and the webpage configurations were awful last time I checked - but I've only used ones that people have had problems with, theres probably many a good one out there!

    However I still standby linksys

    Linksys cards are very reliable.

They have a specific broadcast rate which needs to be set on the router for them to work properly.

A lot of Conexant based routers don't support this. But a lot of routers let you set the broadcast rate.

(I think its the broadcast rate, will check later)

I had a problem simular to this with my DG834G (although the random reboots were 3 a day or so), I applied the new beta 'firmwire' and it worked fantasticly, It's been up for 2 months straight since I've done it.

The OP doesn't want a SpeedTouch 'modem', he wants a wireless router.
