Best wire/wireless Router for AOL BB (UK)

I've been on a usb modem for ages and now i want a Router. It does'nt need to be wireless as i only have 1 PC! Any ideas on a good easy to configure one "Not too expensive"!
Ps i did buy a Samr 4110 a while back but everytime i try and set it up i get no connection. Tried all the Manual suggestions so its probally dead! By the way i do have a Ethenet its installed in my Mobo! But thats another thread,don't want to Bore you all with that again!

There are many that will do the job, for every brand you'll get people with both good and bad experiences. IME I've never had any issues with the Speedtouch series, might be a little more expensive than the others but they are rock solid.

Netgear 834G for AOL, in fact thats the very router they send you if you buy from them direct.

I've installed plenty of these for customers with various ISP's, a nice low maintainence router - works with virtually all games out of the box without any port forwarding etc.

Thanks for your kind replys! Is the HW firewall easy to configure? Also would i need a SW firewall to run along side it? At present i have KPF firewall which has a default setting to block the important stuff, but i understand that is not enough to block Hackers etc! I really am not too good at understanding FW's...especially rules etc

The Netgear DG834G is deffo the best, got 1 at home, 1 at work and one in my Uni house, plus I have setup loads more, they are cheap(ish), very reliable, and a sinch to setup using the web-based utility, and personally I'd recommend using a firewall, just so you know whats going out all the time....

I have heared that the GT vers of this Router is not compatible wiyh AOL, is the G vers much different ?

Whoever told you that is talking complete wallop. The only difference between the 834G and 834GT is the faster 108Mib Wireless on the GT version.

I have recently setup a 834GT for use with AOL and it worked perfectly.

BTW for your information, the only difference between AOL and any other provider is the MTU setting. Normal provider 1458 (or thereabouts) - AOL 1400. Before you buy one use the 834G setup guide for AOL.

EDIT: Damn i cant seem to get one of these for under £30 (2nd hand) anywhere! A buyer on ebay had quite a few refurbs for only £29 but since sold out! Any tips!

Personally i think the Netgear routers are a tad bit on the overkill if you only need to connect one PC just get a nice wired router im sure the RJ11 line should be close to your computer as you've been using a USB modem.

I use a D-Link 504-T with AOL for a long time, and i must say it works like a dream, you can still dial up through the AOL software to collect mails or just use your favourite broswer without dialing up. It costs about £40 nearly half of what the Netgear wireless one costs

If you dont need wireless get a netgear wires only router. Only reason Im sticking with netgear is that they are the least problematic by far. I've used most major and 'not well known' brands and they are virtually all inferior to the Netgear jobbies.

And yes Netgear routers are easy to configure (for p2p ports etc) as all the current ones use the same web interface.
