Firewall (remote install)

Are there any firewalls that don't block everything soon as you install and start it up?


I'm need one for a server(win 2003) just for IP blocking, I tryed sygate but that blocked all access (inc my remote desktop access) soon as I loaded it and waited 8 hours for the data centre to disable the firewall (They refused to just set it to allow all )

Or is there any simple ways to block ips without the use of a firewall?

you could use a tool such as protowall and create your own blacklist - are you wanting to restrict access to just a few ips? Also - I'm sure last time I did a remote install of Sygate server firewall there was an option to allow access for configuration after install... That may well have been Kerio come to think of it.

protowall is not a option because thats a driver install jobie, sygate has no options

maybe it was Kerio then. The version of Sygate is the server fw, not the personal one, right?

If you are setting itt to allow all, why use it in the first place? Far far better to install something that blocks all, then only open up the ports/services you specifically need for incoming services. If the firewall has stateful inspection built in (most NAT routers use that) then you don't need to worry about incoming connections, just allowing the outbound ones.
