Hello, anybody know of ISP's that offer ADSL through NTL phone lines?
Hello, anybody know of ISP's that offer ADSL through NTL phone lines?
Nope...
You will never get ADSL via an NTL phone line as ADSL is only available over BT or LLU (Local Loop Unbundled - companies like bulldog or bethere ) Lines.
This is why NTL offer their "cable offerings" as they do not have the equipment that is capable of ADSL/ADSL2+ which BT are rolling out to all their exchanges.
EXCEPT you need to be aware of the following:
Ready: (self confessed NTL knowledge base ///ACTIVE)
ADSL is only through BT lines. Copper wires.
NTL in its truest form uses its own network of fibre optics (with only copper on the lat streth to your set top box)
HOWEVER....NTL will offer broadband in NON CABLE TV areas via BT's own copper cable and ADSL in their normal brochure and NOT tell anyone.
Further still.....there are areas of new housing that run on a TPON system...
Telephone Protocol over Optical Network. This IS FIBRE OPTIC but it is not the same as NTL cable. It was BT cutting corners and not laying reams of copper into new housing areas. It involves one optic cable to a central junc box in the housing estate and then decode from there to the house.
Currenltly, ADSL will not run on it. One day....but not yet.
Which MEANS people get confused over who should offer them broadband in some areas.
You move in to your new house, and apply to BT/Zen/Virgin/Eclipse/Pipex/Nildram etc etc for ADSL...they say its possible in theory, take your dough, fail it in a line test a week later, refund you.
Then NTL mail shot the entire area and you think you've had a result. The ADSL wouldnt work cos its a fibre optic network, and you've just been offered Broadband by a Cable company.
WRONG>.......They arent allowed to dig up your road (its in the house builders contract) you cant have ADSL which is what NTL were gonna offer you, and you get mad and angry...

Have you heard BT are going to make broadband available to the folks in the hills by moving the equipment closer to the customers and putting the DSLAMS in cabinets on the end of the roads quite like NTL have been doing for years.
[EDIT] The news is released and posted HERE
Why not just stick with NTL? I use them and have done for 4 years - I still pay £20 for a 2mb service which runs perfectly. Not sure about caps, but as there are 3 of us I'm pretty sure we go over the limit each month and they don't say anything. 10mb upgrades early next year too, so it can't be all bad...
Thx for the in-depth advice, I always like to know why stuff works or doesn't work for that matter.
pleasure dear chap
