    Ethernet DSL modem

Hi everyone, I'm buying a wireless setup very soon, and need one final reccomendation, an ethernet adsl modem. I know I could go integrated but none of the integrated sets i looked at had comparable speed to the wireless router I'm getting.

So if people could suggest a good ethernet modem that'd be great. Or if you have any tips on what I should be looking out for in buying one post 'em too.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Does this look okay to you all? Or should I spend more money on it?

i think i've missed something. what *precisely* are you after? your link is to a generic consumer-grade wired router - it has no modem functionality, nor wireless.

if you want to use a device like the above, you need an ethernet adsl modem, such as http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=59999

if you want to use a wireless-only no-modem router, then you also need the above

if you want to use a wireless access point, you want an adsl modem/router combo, e.g. http://www.savastore.com/productinfo...275341&pid=206

if you want least cables, you want a combined modem/router/wireless product, e.g. http://www.savastore.com/productinfo...275457&pid=206

Sorry if I didn't explain myself clearly. I've already chosen the wireless stuff, a Kcorp 802.11g router with a couple of cards from the same company.

Ah, I see the mistake I've made. I missed the fact that that's just a router, not an ADSL modem. Thought that was the one I was looking at a while back, must have been something else. How about this one then. Will I want more features then that? I download quite alot using various programs, game, and generallly just use lot's of ports and stuff like that, will that modem cover my needs?

    Thanks loads.

    That isn't a modem. It's a switch/router without a built in modem.

If you buy it, you'll need a ethernet modem to plug into it.

It's all much of a muchness really but if you mix manufacturers between the router and the client PCs, signal strength / throughput will be slightly lower.

Yeah, I picked that up after Directhex told me, and decided to choose the one linked to in my second post, hopefully it'll be ok.

Well I wouldn't personally choose that D-Link device... better off with something like a Netgear or Speedtouch...

Already have a speedtouch 330, but I need something with ethernet. Why would you not go with the D-Link one?

Can be tricky to set up, and a bit limited in capability. Sppedtouch 510 is a good solid modem/router, then use a separate access point for thye wireless (unless you have already bought the K corp stuff, in which case you are a bit limited)

No, havn't already got anything. Why would I want to use a seperate access point for the wireless network, whats wrong with plugging the DSL modem into the WAN port of the wireless router?

Greater flexibility with a seaparate AP. In can plug into your ethernetwork at any pont to give the best coverage.

There can be problems linking the D-link into a separate router, particularly if you intend going down the non-NAT and using routed IP addresses. Personally I use an integrated modem/router, and a separate access point. This allows me to place the modem near the incoming telephone line, and the AP where I get best coverage in the house.

I have no ethernet network, the whole point of a wireless one is to eliminate all wires from the house that are longer then about half a metre. Thanks for the suggestion, but I think i'll just go with a DSL into WAN port setup.

I am going to use NAT, I figure it just makes everything easier, and I dont think there are any benefits to not doing so.

I may buy a repeater or AP just to have something to pass on the signal, and get more coverage in the house, but I think the routers going next to the phone socket.

I've got a Netgear DG834 into a D-Link Gigabit Switch and a WAP coming off that and serving 2 PC's, my MCE PC and my xbox and its fine.

A separate AP does give you the flexibility of moving it slightly if you have a dead spot in your wireless coverage.

Theres no reason why I couldn't do it my way without an AP, and then if I had bad coverage in my house, buy an AP, plug the modem into it, and move the router to another spot in the house, is there?
