    Getting past firewalls

I'm at uni, and they have just installed a new firewall, which is heavily restricting net usage.

Games no longer work properly, kazaa, irc, etc don't work as they should.

Any decent way to get round it?

Socks2http was suggested earlier, but its no longer free. Any free alternatives available?

kazza light will work over port 80 so will probablyt bypass the firewall
this dont mean that you wont be caught - I run p2p detection probrams on my clients networks and they very good.

The university firewalls are there for a reason, breacheing /bypassing them is almost certainly against your Uni's AUP and could get you into a whole world of hurt !

Depends how well the uni firewall is setup really, but a lot of the higher end ones have the ability to filter out packets regardless of the port you use..

Got a machine at home on broadband ?

Could you set that up as a VPN server, VPN to it and play games like that. its only 1 extra hop, and aslong as nothing else is using the connection on the server, it should work ok.

    Just a thought

Serious? That really does suck. Its made more annoying because its only my college, people in other colleges are freely using the internet connection.

This may be a UDP issue. Games (unlike most other internet traffic like email and www) use UDP instead of TCP as it is a lot faster...

So how does that help getting round the firewall?

Still uses the same port numbering system doesnt it?

Anyone know of any programs to route net traffic to a net server?

Er, it doesn't help you at all

UDP still uses ports yeah. I think (i'm not 100% sure on this but I think...) that UDP does not guarantee that sent packets are received; the receiving host does not acknowledge them and this is why they are faster.

Your final statement is slightly ambiguous. What do you mean by a "net server"? You mean you want to send all your traffic via some sort of proxy?

You wont be able to get games working on a uni connection..... simple. I tried all last year using a whole host of solutions. Socks2http is cheap, and works for irc / kazaa / ftp, which is what i used for a year.
