NTL 10mb & Linksys Router packet loss

    Hi all,

Our NTL cable modem runs via ethernet to a Linksys BEFSR41 router (it's about 2 years old), and I've just upgraded from 2mb to 10mb. However, every 10-20 mins the modem now restarts and reboots, causing us to lose our connection for a minute or so. I called NTL who said the router was responsible for the packet loss, as the line was fine when the ethernet cable from the router to the modem was unplugged.

I tried plugging my pc directly into the modem via ethernet & it seemed fine.

Any suggestions on what I can do fix it? I got the latest firmware from Linksys, but it doesn't appear to have helped.

    Thanks.

Your modem reboots or the router?

    What CM have you got?

The modem. A Motorola Surfboard - the original modem NTL supplied, which I bought at the time.

As far as I'm aware they are - might check for some firmware for the modem though.

I don't think the modem is the issue however, as I noted in the original post, a direct ethernet from my pc to the modem is fine, with no signal drops.

Try dropping the connection timeout from the default (usually very high on Linksys I think) to 180 and upping the maximum numebr of connections to 2048 or 4096 (usually very low by default).

I'd also suggest making sure you have the latest firmware, some of the Linksys formwares are decidedly ropey.

I think the router might be a bit of a ****ter - can't see any options for either of those things. It's a 3 or so years old I guess.

Would hooking the connection from modem => Router => switch => all the pcs help?

That's pretty much what I was saying in my first post. Any other suggestions on what I can do with the router to fix this? I'm not in a position to buy a new router at this point in time.

Thanks for the note. Managed to get it sorted after all - my flatmate needed to work from home and ended buying a new router.

    Cheers
