    domains and hosting...

when you sign up for a domain name and some space on a server (somewhere...) - how does one relate to the other? or does that all become apparent when you get the two?

Some buy domain from the same host and others buy domain seperate from their hosting account and point to host.

If you're just doing simple stuff, whether its Linux or Windows doesn't really matter, except that Linux is case sensitive.

When you buy web space, you set the web space to your domain name. From the domain name company, you point it to the nameservers of the hosting company.

Linux is usually best for Security, but there isn't much difference between them since most servers use Apache (which runs on Windows and Linux anyway).

As Mike_W says, you link the name servers that the hosting company gives you, and you give the hosting company your domain name and they link (usually takes 24 hours though).

Cheapest domain service I have found (for quality and price) is www.godaddy.com, I pay about £4 a year for my .com domain.
