Been wanting to get myself started on making my own site too for a long while now (Don't confuse that with me knowing anything about hosting/domains etc..). can't argue with that QiQ price for hosting though, so have just put an order in. Think i'm going to use them for a .co.uk domain too just so that if i get any problems i'll only have 1 company to deal with. I'm finding the hardest part of all this though is actually just picking a domain name. haha.

Yet again hexus manages to cost me money.

    Cheers guys.

    Bres

    :edit:
Just tried to buy my domain name and i've stumbled at the first hurdle, i've checked to see if the domain is available, then it gives me 2 options for adding it too my cart, either "register this domain name" or "park this domain name". Ummm, what's the difference and which do i want?

    :edit no.2:
Everything sorted, sent an email to QiQ and (wow, the service is quick and helpful) they responded within minutes explaining everything.

It all depends on what your hosting company offers. With Qiq you can set up unlimited pop e-mail accounts with separate usernames and passwords asmanyasyoulike@bigkahoonaburger.com, or forwarding somthing@bigkahoonaburger.com gets forwarded to another address you choose, along with a catch-all anything@bigkahoonaburger.com to one address. All set-up through thieir web control panel.

Right, done it, I've now got hosting with qiq...very helpful they are
now, I'm an utter novice at this website stuff, so I've got the name, the space but not a clue how to go about putting my ideas of a site to fruition...
I've got an idea of what I'd like it to look a bit like:
    http://www.colinprior.co.uk/

this one's quite nice and tidy, what I also like is the way images change when you hit refresh...any idea how to do something like that? anything I should go and read to help my understanding of it all?
I really want to get something up and running for my photography fairly soon...perhaps justa front 'under construction' would be ok...do I make a simple 'index.html' and upload it?

if you want to have updating image galleries, navigation bars, or any fancy effects without much effort, have at a look at www.dynamicdrive.com

they have loads of free DHTML scripts. Basically, browse through the categories, find something you like, and copy/paste the code into your editing package code

    all instructions are given

would just need to customise the code to suit your requirements.

really, is NOT difficult. Just read the instructions. No need to be a programmer.

for the current page, although you might put up a construction page, would be useful to put some contact details too. You don't want people to put the effort in to coming to your site, only to find nothing useful.

Joomla is the result of a split with some of the Mambo people.

Although I'm quite impressed with Mambo (indeed, I've worked on an Open Source project with one of the new senior Joomla people) - I preffer other CMS systems personally.

Just wanted to bump this and say thanks a million for the recommendation of QIQ - this morning I've succesfully transferred a PHP-Nuke site from my old host to my new hosting package on QIQ. I am so immensly impressed so far that I wanted to post on here. QIQ promise to have the account setup within 5 minutes of ordering... try 5 seconds The control panel for the site is great - having used cpanel for years, I was slightly worried that the QIQ custom control panel looked a little basic, however a bit of investigating and it's got all the main features you need in there. The real clincher for me however is the lightening quick speed of the hosting, I was expecting the servers to be located in the US as per most cheap-as-chips hosts, however they are UK based and I'm pinging them at 21ms!! The site flies along, compared to my old hosts www.hosting-unlimted.net who I ping at 120ms and it's horribly sluggish (not to mention the downtime, completely unstable mail servers etc....).

I seriously say to anyone out there looking for cheap webhosting, just forget about everyone else and have a look at QIQ. It almost feels wrong to call them "cheap" judging by the quality I've experienced so far, these guys are 1st class.

    Just an after thought...

ExaHost - http://www.exahost.co.uk - provide cheap, basic and very good quality Windows hosting. I have been using them for sometime now and have recommended them to quite a few people. Their service and support is excellent - they have always responded to my emails within minutes. The best bit about them is that they offer basic cheap packages, each part of which can be upgraded to suit your needs at anytime.

I'm current with Dreamhost, simply because there was an offer where I could get a years hosting for $8! 1TB/month 20Gb disk SQL,PHP,etc etc. Can't beat that! However ikhost looks like a pretty good deal too!

I'm with Dreamhost too. It was a great deal at the time and hads loads of features. Unlimeted subdomains, unlimieted mysql databases, free domain name for life of hosting plan. 20Gb storage and 1Tb bandwidth, and may mroe features. But I do agree that there are some good deals out there. The only downside to Dreamhost is it is based in the US so it's response time is slightly slower than that of a UK based host.
