Advice needed on improving wireless signal

I have a Linksys wireless router and PC card. When the laptop is sitting next to the router I get a 91% signal. If I move a few feet away this drops to 50%, and if I'm in the next room, it goes down to 20%.

My friend has the Belkin wireless router and USB stick and he gets the same problem in his house.

Are there any config settings which would improve the signal quality.

I cannot believe that these products are sold with the intention that any wireless devices have to be sat right next to the routers to get them to connect.

    Cheers

    Rob

Whats your house like? My house was made in the 80's so basically a brick box with wood and plaster for walls. I could get the signal about 50 metres from the house with my old
dlink box with my new asus one about 80. Make sure XP is fully updated and your using new drivers and firmware on both machines.

There is something funky going on if you get that much of a signal drop by just moving a few feet away.

are there other wireless networks in your area? what about a cordless digital phone?

There are loads of things that can cause interference on the 2.4ghz spectrum. Microwaves are a good example.

You could try changing the wireless chanel. Can't think of anything else right now.

Try moving the router somewhere else. In my house I can get a near perfect wireless signal almost anywhere but I couldn't when the router was near the kitchen/back room. Moving it to an upstairs bedroom sorted this out
