    Networking probs

Just got a new Belkin router and it seems to work ok

I've been having problems thou as I want to hook up my work laptop to it so I can download and work at the same time, problem is my work pc is on a domain and uses VPN to recieve work emails etc.

I hooked it up to the router but for some reason I couldnt see a web page, and my router light was a constant orange colour instead of green.

I thought I'd be clever and try and take it off the doman but that only served to lock me out of my laptop all toghether so now I have to go back into to work for them to sort it.

I have a couple of questions.

When they fix it how do I get my laptop to see the net? any pointers?

I've also beeing trying to work out how quick I connect to the net with my router, before I bought it I had a speedtouch 330 and was connecting at 7.7 kbs I have no way to tell how fast the router connects but after a few speed tests it appears to connect at 4.4kbs I dont know how accurate that is however?

Finally I do alot of downloading via bittornado, im on freedom to suf but since I have my router installed I am unable to connect properly, I configured it to forward the ports but i've read I need to make my ip static, I also have another pc connected via the router so does this mean I have to make both PC's IP static?

I really have no idea how to do to this are there any guides on the net or does anyone have a quick walkthrough, Im on freedom to surf and have all the details they sent me there is a static ip there too.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know about anyone else but if I caught someone using one of my company machines to download stuff they'd be hung out to dry!

I suspect I know what your problem here is, but really don't want to start suggesting stuff in case you work for the same company as I do and I get handed your laptop to fix when things go wrong!

No danger of that if your in York I probably didnt explain myself too well

I use my home pc to download and the work pc is totally dedicated for work.

As you say I've seen people rinsed for using work machines for personal useage so Im very clever not to do it.

This is why I bought the router thing because the previous setup only allowed me to download on my home pc then I had to disconnect it then check work emails then go back online on my home pc.

Im hoping that someone could give me an insight as to how to share the connection for both

Aha, fair enough. I suppose I'll take your word for it.

Basically your router will also be acting as a DHCP server, handing out IP addresses as your machines request them. If you want to set up port forwarding rules to point to an ip rather than a hostname (this is usually the case) you'll need to create a reservation on your router so that affected machines are always given the same ip address. No idea about your router as I tend not to touch Belkin stuff if at all possible, so can't really help you on exactly how to do that.

As for your work laptop - check and see if it has a static or dynamically assigned ip address - my thought is that it's probably set to static in a range different to you router's DHCP scope. If this is the case take a note of the settings so you can reset them afterwards (you can actually set up an alternative address which would be used if a DHCP server is not detected on boot, which may be the case with the work network) and set it to dynamic. Do the same for DNS. Once this is done do an ipconfig /release and an ipconfig /renew and you should have an ip in a range uyour router understands. Once this is done try accessing the internet/your vpn etc etc.

If not post back with a little more info - ipconfig details would be handy. Also if you're working wired or wirelessly, which can open a whole new can of worms!

Simple answer? use Azureus. The UPnP feature _just works_
