    Help with restricting folder access.

    Hi guys,

I have 4 PCs in the house, 3 of which are wireless, and another of which is wired. They are all connected to a broadband router.

I am sharing some hard drives and folders across the network, but there is one hard drive that I want accessible by 2 of the PCs (both wireless), and not by the other two.

What can I do to stop these two PCs viewing the drive?

    Thanks,

    Jonny

If you happen to be running XP Pro on the one that is sharing the drives, set the permissions, then allow the users of the two pcs to have access, but not the other two?

Also put a $ at the end of the share name - makes it a hidden share

    That $ thing helps, cheers.

However, I can't find the permissions options? I think I know where they're supposed to be (right click on drive, properties, sharing), but I can't see them?

I can do a screenshot if that would help.

Cheers for the help so far!

By the way, all 4 machines are XP (3 x XP pro and 1 x XP home).

Sorry I have just realised the permissions thing is only on 2k3 or server varieties (the ones I happen to work with).

Im thnkin that your best bet would be to map the drive on the two pcs you want to be able to access that shared folder and not tell anyone about the share. Not ideal, but with a lack of permissions management in WinXP (unless I've missed it) its probably the easiest

    Hope this helps

    Dave

You can do permissions with XP at least definitely with XP Pro, not sure about XP Home.

Go to "Folder Options" in Control Panel and make sure "Use Simple File Sharing" isn't ticked.

    No problem

TBH i used simple file sharing till a couple of years ago when I had to set up SMB shares for my xbox. But it's much safer to use permissions so the guest account is disabled especially if your using wireless!
