Angry Dropped connection is p***ing me off

    I have Telewest 512k BB . . . using a netgear RP114 router to share the connection between 2 computers & XBOX.

On my rig (the one I leave on for downloads), it has recently repeatedly dropped the connection (computer freezes for a bit first) - I have to disbale the connection, and then re-enable it to get it back. The other machine is unaffected. Kinda annoying when you leave your machine on all night or whilst you're at work and the thing has stopped 10 mins after u've left it.

Is it something to do with Im using practically all my bandwidth for uploads/downloads that that particular machine's connection gets dropped?

If so, what can I do to prevent it, coz it's bleedin' well humping my leg.

I don't think it's your cable connection. If the other PC isn't effected then it can't be.

When you say that you leave it downloading, do you mean P2P'ing? If so, then that's probably it. If you're using IE to download or FTP then that's a different matter.

I would try leaving the download PC connected directly to the cable modem and see what happens, if the problem persists, it's local to the PC. If not, have a look at the router ports/cat5 cables.

By the sounds of it though it's the PC. Maybe check the network card? You've probably thought of all this anyway, but thought I'd reply!

In the interests of correctness, I'll assume that the download PC downloads nothing but free Linux distro's!!!!

See it used to happen to me . . . same machine . . . then it stopped . . . and a year down the line, it's happening again!

Cant directly connect the PC to the cable modem - cant get a long enough cable! though when you say check the network card, what do you mean? To see if it's in right?

Yeah, check the card is seated correctly and maybe even check it in a different PC.

Also, this probably has nothing to do with it, but recently I noticed that I had a 'network bridge' on my connection, which really screwed things up. It gave me an ip address of 0.0.0.0. I disabled the bridge and all was well, pulled some hait out in the process mind you!

Are you not able to move the PC closer to the modem?

Other than that....maybe check your drivers, change the port that the PC is connected to on the router, or maybe even a re-install of the OS? Sounds drastic, but it can fix oh-so-many problems!

Okay, the problem is that the machine says it cannot renew the IP address.

Not sure if that means it's the WAN (internet) IP address coz the other ports work fine.

And if it's the LAN, it's always at 192.168.0.2

And this is the machine that the Router's spoofing.

    Any more ideas?

If your using a file sharing program it is probably flooding the netgear router causing the routher to crash.

If you can borrow another router or move your pc near the cable modem and connect it directly tour problem should disappear.

Is the router well ventilated. Nothing on top of it, its not on a carpet etc...

Does the router have the latest firmware?

I dont have this router but read about this problem with another netgear router on a forum the other day.
