    Bt line only

Is it possible to get a bt connection but without the phone package so it can just be used for a broadband connection?

If so where- i could not find anything by searching.

    Thanks

I don't think so. I saw some TV program touching this a few months back. It was about skype, and one of their users wanted to stop paying for their BT phone line (as they don't use the phone), but still us BT internet (as they need it for skype), but BT wouldn't let them.

You need to pay line rental, for the broadband to go over the lines.

You pay line rental and then pay for calls, so why not pay line rental and pay for broadband?

I think you used to be able to order a line that would receive calls only, but couldn't make them (apart from 999, I'd assume). Might not be possible anymore.

I'm curious too, moving into a house in September with 3 other people (we're students), and we don't really need the phone, just the broadband.

I can't remember what the name is, but i pay £10.99 a month for line rental, that is all. It is just the basic direct debit deal. You can't get cheaper than that.

Last [academic] year I was renting a place in an area that couldn't get cable. This forced us to get ADSL and the best offer at the time (unlimited downloads) was NTL Freedom on a 12 month contract. As I was only living there for 9 months I cancelled the BT line rental after this, yet the net still works and has done for the last couple of months (still within 12 month period so can't cancel it yet without £100 charge!).

Not sure if this is just a freak occurance or if this what normally happens, but it may be a sign that you can get ADSL just by having the line. The BT guy did tell me that once the ADSL provider found out they may charge a fine or something, but NTL Freedom doesn't - others might so watch out!
