    Question Nero or Burner ?

I've just tried to burn two video files to a DVD.

I'm using an LG-4163B ( Firmware A103 ) and Nero 6.6.0.8a. Nero info tool reports XP ASPI and Nero ASPI working correctly.

The burn start okay, then bins out with the following log file:

Is it liable to be a problem with my burner, or the program itself ?

    Turns out it was neither.

I was using my burner in an external enclosure and that was the problem. As soon as I swapped the drives over, so the burner was inside the Shuttle case, it works perfectly.

Scratch that...looks like the problem is back.

    Hopefully Nero support can help

What are you trying to do, create a DVD from a compressed video source, a DVD from a DVD compatible video source, or simply copy video files as files?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

I'm trying to write two large ( 1.14Gb and 1.64 GB respectively ) on to a DVD-R. The disc seems to write okay, but on data verification, it has sector read errors from about 50% through the disc.

The first video file can be read, but the second is corrupt, even though the original on my hard drive is fine.

The problem is that you don't have DMA enabled.

I'm surprised your PC isn't really slow as well.

Check the Bios first and make sure DMA is enabled (not PIO mode) for your hard drive/s and also for your CD and DVD drive/s.

Then do the same in Device Manager.

I've checked BIOS and it lists PIO mode as Auto and DMA as Auto.
I can't disable PIO mode in BIOS, but when I check the Device Manager for the disk, it lists the mode as:

Serial ATA Generation 1-1.5G for the hard drive.
Ultra DMA 2 for the burner.

The log you supplied lists DMA as off for two devices installed.

    === Scsi-Device-Map ===
    CdRomPeripheral : IDE DVD-ROM 16X nvatabus Port 0 ID 2 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2500JD-00HBB0 nvatabus Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

If you cannot enable DMA, then you need to update your motherboard drivers.

It's only older hardware that needs PIO mode,

I have the latest BIOS from Shuttle, so I'm stuffed there.

When I go into Device Manager, it's set to let BIOS automatically choose the best mode. On the HD, I have either Serial ATA Generation 1-1.5G or PIO. It's set to the first.

On the burner, there are loads of modes listed and it's set to Ultra DMA.

I have changed it from auto, to manual and selected the same modes again.

I'll try another burn and see if anything has changed.

Long shot I know, but could it be the size of the second file that's causing the problem ?

No change, by manually setting the mode to what XP was selecting anyway.

As I've stated, you will always have problems until you enable DMA.

XP will revert to PIO mode by default after a certain number of errors as a safety measure.

If you cannot enable DMA, then you need to update your motherboard/controller drivers.

Both your LG DVD burner and Western Digital hard drive have DMA off.

    All modern hardware uses DMA.

I hear what you're saying, but when I look at the drives in Device Manager, it reports both are using DMA. It's only Nero's log that reports PIO.

I have re-installed the drivers for my motherboard a few times, using both Shuttle's and the nForce4 driver pack from nVidia's site.

I've even tried the OC.com PIO mode fix ( http://www.overclockers.com/articles1161/ ), but that hasn't worked either.

Check System Information in Accessories, then System Tools.

Look in the DMA and also Problem Devices heading and what do they say?

Assuming you are using the latest Bios and latest motherboard controllers, set it so it only uses DMA. Don't allow other or secondary options.

If that is failing, try removing the relevant controller/s from Device Manager, rebooting and letting windows detect it.

If that still fails, try reinstalling Nero.

To do that you need to download from the Ahead Website the Nero Clean Tool as the normal uninstaller doesn't remove everything.

The only other things I can think off is the IDE cables, and conflicting software.

If you have other burning software, remove them and try just Nero.

Failing all that, then the fault either lays with the controller drivers or Nero itself.

If you have the patience and motivation, you can use CD/DVD Speed included in the Nero Toolkit.

Finally, try a simulation burn with a slow speed and if that is okay try gradually increasing it.

Sorry, but without having the PC in front of me that's about all I can come up with.

    Good luck.
