    Diy Nas

I could just buy a Buffalo Terastation NAS product, but I thought it might be better (from an upgrade and performance point of view) to just build one myself. In fact I've got an old PC based on an i850 chipset, 2.4GHz Intel Pentium and 512Mb RAMBUS lying around. Apart from buying several hard-drives, I would need to buy a PCI based RAID 5 or 6 card (with more than 4 ports) and also a PCI based Gb ethernet card. This PC will only be used for NAS duties, so it doesn't even need to be Windows based (I have a copy of Windows2000 lying around just in case). I'm really looking for hardware recommendations for RAID and Gb ethernet card, but also for generic advice anything really to ensure that I don't go down the wrong track. Cheers.

Thanks. That deals with the software side of things. Any recommendations on hardware?

That does sound like just the ticket. Need to see if the subsequent array will be seen by something like FreeNAS. Also what's up with different versions (for Gamers, for Multimedia, for Music Professionals) the chipset they are based on is the same.

Just read the manual, and it's not a RAID5 card, but RAID3 which is fairly similar except that parity information is stored on a single drive rather than spread out across all disks.

They are all the same card, with different software bundles etc.
