The fatherin-law has got his good lady a nice centrino laptop so she doesn't pester him for net access when he's zipping about in a flight sim. Now his setup is with a usb modem on BT/Yahoo & he wants the laptop to have net access too. What's the easiest/cheapest way?

If he has adsl then I would get a wireless broadband router/modem and use a wired ethernet connection to his PC, then use a wireless connection for the laptop. You can probably do that for £50.
Cheapest way is to share the connetion from the main PC, but that relys on the desktop being on all the time. You could do that wired via ethernet, or wireless by adding a wifi card to the desktop.
Personally I would go the router/modem way as its a lot easier.
Seconded; a PC's a hungry beast to leave on all the time just to provide internet access. The initial outlay on the router'd probably be recovered in reduced power consumption.

I'd agree with Flibb, and wireless modem routers are fairly cheap (even 54Mb are low).
