Gigabit Switches

I need 3 switches

- 1 Rackmount - to go in my home cabinet - for routing around the home
- 2 5 port or more to go around the house.

All cabling is done .... I'm on 100mbit at the moment

I don't want to spend a total fortune

If the rackmount can be managed that would be a bonus

I have a different model that was housed in a plane rectangular metal box. seems to work well, although not used it much.

How about this for the rack mountable one? or is 24 port overkill?

Hmmmmmmmmm thats a bit silly now. A Cisco 3560G is around £2,500. Even their cheapest switches are around £700.

Netgear do some OK managed switches; you didn't mention whether you wanted layer 2 or layer 3 switches. If layer 2, then a GS724T ought to do nicely for your racked switch. 24 ports with enough management to allow you to configure trunking, VLANs etc. About £200-230. Layer 3 is pricier; a GSM7312 would be good, but would set you back the thick end of £700 inc VAT (£660 from Insight) for 12 fully managed L3 ports. For your 5-or more-Ports, I'd go for GS108s or if you really only needed 5 ports GS105s; the ProSafe switches are a lot more rugged than their white placcy brethren, and have 16Gbps bandwidth for the 8 port and 10 for the 5-port, so they're non-blocking.

A lot of people don't know that the Dells are just rebranded HP's.

You can knock HP for a lot of things but the hardware is some of the best.

Hex, the reason the Netgears beat the Cisco kit is that tbh Cisco is ment for Layer 3 and above switching thats what they have tweaked the SW for, it's rather poor at just being a general switch/router as imho the sw is rather bloated for just a switch where as the netgear stuff i have used is striped down to just what it needs for it's job.

It's about having the right tool for the job.
