what does it do? does it pick up an wireless connection and have ethenet ports?
its a router/switch that transmits/receives wireless signals to/from multiple wireless computers and links them into a LAN, so yes it picks up a wireless connection and has at least one ethernet port
so i could use it to connect to a wireless modem and connect my pc via ethernet rather then the usb dongle i got now?
A wireless access point converts a wireless signal to wired ones. Usually you have one built into your modem/router so you can have wireless laptops or dongles connect out to the Internet without lots of trailing wires.
Is there some reason you want to connect via wired rather than USB dongle?

yeah, because i having diffculty connection my xbox360 via ICS i thought if i had got a wireless point i could plug my 360 into in aswell as my pc
Blackmage: I don't understand the problem, you're saying you have a wireless dongle in your PC which connects it to the Internet right?
If that's the case, your modem will have a built in access point, and all you will need is an XBOX 360 wireless adapter. Can you let me know how it's all connected at the moment, and then maybe I can help more.
EllTheGamer: Try changing the wireless channel. Changed mine from the default (6 IIRC) to 1, and my throughput jumped from 38kbps to nearly 1000kbps over a standard 54MB/s 802.11g adapter.

i wanted to avoid buying an xbox 360 wireless adpater as they are very expensive. i wanted to connect my xbox to my pc via ethernet and share my internet connection with my xbox via ics, but i can't seem to get ics to work as i don't understand none of this ip dns stuff
That should be simple, just select share my internet connection, and plug in the xbox. As I said I can't really help any further unless you tell me what you've got and how it's set up.
Tom
Do you have Cable or DSL?
What modem/router do you have?
What is connected to it?
How it is connected? Wired/Wireless?
Do you know if you are using static or DHCP IP addresses?
Tom
Nope, it was aimed at BlackMage :-)
