It that as the crow flies, or actual line length?

I am 2km from my exchange, but my actual line length is 6.7km

i'm guessing that as Autopilot has had a lot of discussion with BT and his ISP regarding line stability etc. i think be has probably been told this by BT themselfs. Either that or the ISP can supply this information from doing some diagnostics on the line.

There are some extra checks using a system that the general public does not have access too (at least i don't think so), generally just ISP's.

However, i did not find out from my ISP (although an engineer did eventually tell me). A nice chap called James who runs http://www.dslzoneuk.net did a check for me.

Well, things are looking a bit better now. I live in an apartment (posh word for flat!) and I noticed the communal DP (distribution point) for the BT wiring to the flats had the cover off and the wiring was exposed and was not very tidy.

I asked BT to come and sort that out and also complained that my home phone line was noisy (at no charge to me as the DP box is not in my flat but in the communal areas so it's BT responsibility).

The BT engineer came out and checked the wiring and put the cover back on. He then did a line test on my BT line and it came back 100% normal with no faults.

I then rebooted my Draytek 2800G router and it synchronised at 3.6Mb/S with an SNR of 16dB. That's much better than it has been for several weeks.

If I had done the same via my ISP then I would have been charged! So, for anyone with ADSL connectivity issues, just log a fault with BT for your home phone line and complain that the line is noisy and you'll get your ADSL line fixed as well.

I would not have thought so, i have had ISP's arrange BT to come out and fix wiring plenty of times. If BT find a fault that's past their boundary of responsibility, BT will charge you not the ISP. It makes little difference who actually calls them out. In fact in most cases its a safer bet to call your ISP as they will often have a special deal with BT or cover the cost themselves in order to keep your custom.

Actually, i would just count yourself lucky and say thats not the norm. I have complained about the noise on my line for years, but BT always do a remote line check and say it fine for phone calls - they will allow quite an astonishing amount of noise before they say it not fit for calls, let alone ADSL. BT have to ensure that a line is fit for phone calls only, but with ADSL it a case of 'if it works it works'.

Yes , might be a good idea, Got an old compy and the caps are 'a goin', and I was constantly being 'thrown ' out of Hexus either to yahoo home page or a complete re-set of machine . Have now moved the ram into another machine to make it a 'wee bit faster', but it still has a very 'slow' chip' . Never mind we are getting there ,and I have a nice chappie looking into a wee 'Hexus trust' problem that I have. Maybe after that we will be able to 'speed things up a little' .

as am not a ' speed typist,

Noise and loss . Way forward is fibre or 'digital regeneration on copper' . The Germans manage 18-20k on their sdsl lines by footbox digital regens by this method . Copper lines have great qualities -' it's the thinkin'stategy that needs to change butter cut this off now afor i'm thrown out again.

If the 'keep me logged into hexus' option is not work, you need to check your browser cookie settings. Failing that, contact a mod for help.
