    Stair/saftey gates

Our little one toook her first steps a couple of weeks ago and because of this is wanting her freedom more and more, and here in lies the problem!!

The house we live in has an open staircase (there is no bannisters on them) and a set of patio doors that lead from the living room to the back garden (with quite a big step out for a 1 year old). Short of shutting her in the living room and having the patio doors constantly closed (which isn't comfortable in this hot weather!!) I am at a loss as to what to do. I can't seem to see any products on the market that cater for either of these safety problems. Traditional stair/saftey gates just won't fulfill the task. Has anyone encountered these problems before and if so how did you solve them? It's not going to be long before we end up having an accident at this rate!!!

Patio does are simple, make your own gate, get a bit of wood almost the right length, then put an angle braket at both ends (on the top), use that to mount a bolt with 2 nuts on it, you can use this to lock in place the board, then, get a big sheet of hardboard to cover the gap under the bar. Want the quick version? get a sheet of hardboard to big for the gap, get some gaffer tape and your done.

As for the stairs, perhaps consider getting a fire guard to fence off the bottom of it, and use a gate a the top if you can.

Need to be wall mounted and I can't work out how you would do it for the stairs.

Would probably be suitable for the door, possibly??

I did consider some kind of DIY one for the back door, but i am scared of her applying pressure to it and falling out on top on it. She's a bit of a climber and has been since she learned to crawl.

I imagine it might work quite well with patio doors but I'm not sure about the length...

My parents using a wallpaper table at the bottom of their open staircase, but it's perhaps a bit to much of a faff to use every day, and although it fits snuggly against their wall making it quite stable, stability may be an issue in other situations.

Having said that if you can't wall mount, then I imagine stability is going to be a problem - and when little 'en gets a bit bigger if it's not fixed they'll just figure out how to move it out of the way...

I've bought two of these few months back:

Both do the job really well, make sure to measure to figure out if you need extensions or not.

    Very solid and relatively cheap.
