Dont smoke
Does that stop you buying some lighter fluid? As an alturnative you could try heat (hair dryer)/steam and a paper towel. I however think solvent might be the better approach. Either way it will probably leave a mark. The best thing to do with painted walls to paint over it when you have removed the waxy finish as it is non stick.

i can buy some yes, i was after a more immediate solution
sand and paint?
Sand and paint would be the last resort. You might find you need to sand, filler and then paint. As the sanding will probably damage the surface.

baby wipe and gentle rubbing was the correct answer it seems
I shall remember that, I aways did wonder what solvent was in those wipes.... the little one likes them a little to much.

Virtually anything can be cleaned with baby wipes.
also try brown paper and a iron
it will melt the crayon and put the residue into the brown paper keep doing it till all crayon is gone.
work in a school and it works most times, works better if wall is wallpapered, just remember keep the iron hot enough to melt the crayon only.this also works on fabrics and with cooking fat/oil stains as well.
paint over it :d

i use the baby wipes as well
This is why we pay extra for the washable crayons.
Even though they do not come of easily if painted on wood or scratchy surfaces.
