Board games that don't leave you bored!

    Hello lovely people :-)

What non digital board games do you and your family enjoy?

    My current favourites are:

    Carcassone
    Labyrinth

Before I am asked, no I'm not pimping them. But I am interested in what you guys play so I can look at them too :-)

    Dungeons & Dragons.... kinda bored-gamey, especially 4thEd.

I find it depends on who you play these things with.
The Mrs is insanely competitive, whereas I prefer co-op games. Consequently, I hate all her bored games, which is why I use that spelling.

Re: Board games that don't leave you bored!

Pandemic is number one. So good we played the one-off Legacy version last year, was really enjoyable. If you haven't played it, go get it. It's coop, so less hurt feelings.

I quite enjoy Ticket To Ride (Europe), for two players it's fairly peaceful and relaxing, but can get complex with more players.

I enjoy Carcassone too, but the Mrs gets pissed when I play aggressively. So in the end it becomes a luck of the draw game for us.

Space Alert is complicated to get to grips with, and is deliberately manic. It's a different take on board games.

There are a few others I have, but I can't remember what their names are now.

In the non-board game category, Exploding Kittens is quite fun with more than two players, it's a bit dull with just two. And it requires a computer, but Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes is a fantastic family game - but only when you're disorganised.

Re: Board games that don't leave you bored!

+1 to Pandemic, Carcassone & Ticket To Ride.

Speaking of the Legacy games, I'd heartily recommend Risk: Legacy, even if you don't enjoy standard Risk. Hell, especially if you don't enjoy standard Risk.

We've just finished the last game of it (over a year, we savoured it!) in a group of 4 none of whom are fans of Risk and it has been the best board gaming experience I've ever had. I'm planning on framing the finished board and mounting it on my wall it's that good.

A word of warning though, if you don't know what the Legacy version is about then be careful how you Google it. Look for spoiler free reviews.

Hmm I want to say Monopoly but that feels so generic. What I do love though is Cards Against Humanity! Some of the combos in that game are hilarious and with the right crowd, it's amazing

I understand that one has been proven too formulaic - ie once you know the primary and secondary strategies, then so long as you're the first to land on the relevant tiles, you are guaranteed to win.

You can get blank cards to fill in and make jokes relevant to those you're playing with, possibly replacing a few that might be a bit too risqué. I also heartily recommend their customer service if you have any problems with an order. In my experience their reply was prompt, reasonable and entirely in character.

Pandemic and Forbidden Desert for me, both were a great intro into co-op board games.

Re: Board games that don't leave you bored!

Oooooh, so many options! Was at a board game convention at the weekend actually - great way to learn new games

    Current favourites:

Big Book of Madness - great co-op game, one of the most cooperative I've played. Lovely artwork. Our kids were both well into teenagerdom by the time we got a copy so can't say for sure, but I think it'd be good for kids down to quite a young age as there's not that much need for indviduals to read.

Isle of Skye - a lovely little tile-placement game with some bidding aspects. If you like Carcassonne, this is the next step up in complexity.

Le Havre - a classic Uwe Rosenberg worker placement game, more enjoyable (imo at least!) than Agricola and Caverna. And I've actually played it in Le Havre, for gamer srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish bonus points

So there's a few of my faves to get you started

    I'm impressed!

Board games are alive and kicking :-), thank you all for your suggestions!

If you want a game where you flick stuff about.. I heartilyl recomend Cube Quest

its funny too, as it involves flicking cubes, and the odd random outright victory or utter failure can be a moment of gold

If you're ever near Reading, stop by Eclectic Games (or use their website/phone, if you prefer) - They're just about the largest stockist of board games in the European continent... and their staff have, collectively, played every single game on their stocklist!

I rather suspect there are three or four shops in each country in Europe that claim that crown... Notoriously competitive, game shops

Manchester's biggest LFGS moved to a new, bigger site recently. Air con and everything. It's marvellous!
