Power Supply dead? How to test?

I have a problem with my daughter’s PC – last time it was used OK at the end of the session it would not shut-down, a shut-down command always resulted it a re-start. So I forced it to power-off by pressing in and holding the power-on button on the case.

Next day it would not power on – the led on the motherboard briefly lit and went out. So I probably have a PSU fault or a motherboard fault.

Is there a simple way to force the PSU to power on if not connected to the motherboard so I can test it / check if there is any life with a voltmeter?

    Yes.

The green pin (about the 4th one in and the only green one) and any of the blacks next to it, get a paperclip and put it in both of the pins, you can then use the switch on the back of the psu as a start stop switch. It is best to connect at least one thing that uses power, like a fan controller and some fans etc.

Thanks Clunk - I had a private bet with myself that you would be in there with a solution!

How is the sad tale of the Commando going?

Dunno about the commando, scan got it back last thursday and it's still showing as not received, I rang up and they said they have a huge backlog of rma's, so I got them to put that as a refund instead of replacement and I ordered another, but it says no delivery until friday

As a positive, the second replacement psu is coming tomorrow from enermax

    Is your psu buggered then?

The 'dead' PSU is an Antec TruePower 380SP that came with an Antec Sonata case about 3.5 years ago.... it is not a new one and has given a lot of service. I think it died gently, and just passed away in it's sleep.....

An Antec 430 TruePower I bought about 4 years ago gave up with a bang. Other parts were ok (thank God).
