yup thats entirely true, but most of us going for so-called 'duff cpu's' are doing so with the knowledge of the q6600 prices around the corner (i was actually going to get a s775 celeron but figured id like to use the chip in a second build).

but even if you run the e4400 at 3-3.5ghz with good air cooling (xp90C), it still helps to run the ram at >800mhz (may be a little bit, but thats what overclockers do, lots of input for not a lot of gain, anyone can run a e4400 at 3ghz).

I personally always think of how likely it is that the thing will be replaced - i dont envisage moving to ddr3 anytime soon, so a good set of ddr2 will be able to give good performance for some years (im talking 3-4 years)yet.

its an investment, not a stopgap (like the chip).

Thank you 5aboy seems as though you get what I'm trying to achieve, although having just look at the specs of the old board I'm going to use, mite have to be a pentium D or i mite just bugger it and get a E4300/E4400 anyway and a new board later on LOL!

well if my pc hadnt broken catastrophically over the weekend, i wanted to wait another few weeks so i had more cash for the gfx card.

i had in the back of my mind the expiry of the google £10 offer (june 10th i think) so i just went for it.

i thought of the pentium D thing, but figured it was too close in price to the e4xxx, so i used ebuyer and got the e4400 at £76 shipped - the e4300 will be a little less expensive.

id check out ebuyer as you get free delivery on the CPUs too, so have a look before going for it. p5kdlx wifi - after clunk's attempts, its quite hard not to justify this for a planned q6600 build.

    good luck with it.

Well it's still amazing what "ordinary" ram can do, G.skill seems to be the most popular ram, and P5b is tops.

The ballistix 5300 from crucial seems to be pretty good, pretty much seems to be reaching PC6800 speeds without even trying, and quite a few have gone to around 1000MHz

Thanks for all your help guys i think i'm going to go with the crucial stuff! Seems to get really good review from an over clocking point of view!

One final question though am i gonna see a big difference between 2GB and 4GB and before you say i will be running vista 64 bit so can handle 4GB.

Is it worth spending the extra on say Crucial Ballistix or OCZ Platinum over something like 2 sticks of this:

    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(16578)...G64TU8HB0.aspx

This would be to run with an E4300, which I hope to overclock to 3ghz.

Yeh possibly, but i'm only planning on using the E4300 for a few weeks until the Intel quad core is reduce in July at which point i shall have one of those, a bit like clunks setup!

I'm running 2 x 1gb OCZ Platinum with my E4300. Probably overkill but it should be fairly future proof.

    My System: Coolermaster Centurion 5 (black) case, Intel E6750 Core2Duo, Tagan Easy-Con 530W, Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI, OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC, Samsung SpinPoint 200Gb SATA2 / 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200Gb SATA, 256Mb Sapphire ATI PCI-E X1950PRO, Creative X-Fi Xtreme 7.1, 19" Daewoo W9ZQ Black Widescreen TFT, 4Mb Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Blueyonder) with Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G and DD-WRT firmware.
