Help! Boot up freezes with SN45G

Just got a new Shuttle SN45G. After putting it all together, the boot-up froze when trying to detect IDE devices. It also froze when i pressed DEL to try to get to setup.

By unplugging various components, i've narrowed it down to the Pioneer 105 DVD-R/RW (when it is disconnected, all is ok)

I'm going to try putting in a Pioneer 120 DVD-ROM next, to make sure it is the DVD-R/RW at fault (although it worked fine in my full tower PC a few hours ago!)

Is the power supply powerful enough for a dvd writer?

Spec:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (reported correctly on boot up)
1Gb (2x512) TwinMOS DDR PC3200 (reported correctly - also says 'Memeory Frequency 400MHz' - is this ok, or should i try and get this reduced to 333MHz in bios?)
120Gb Maxtor HD
32Mb GeForce 2 GTS AGP
MS Office USB Keyboard
P/S 2 scroll mouse

Sounds like youve got the master/slave jumper on the DVDrw set wrong. If it is set to MAster with Slave - and youve got no slave you get the hanging your getting. Set it to master without slave and it should be ok.

It was on Master, tried it on Slave and cable select with no joy.

Also tried a DVD-ROM with the same effect, so it can't be the writer

gonna try changing the memory around, then changing graphics cards...

strange that the supplied cable wasn't working properly, or is the supplied one just a standard 40 pin cable? (using an 80 pin cable now)

glad to be of service, exactly the same thing happened to me with my pioneer 106

This kind of happened to mw - could not get cdwriter to be recognised on boot - played around with settings to no avail - finally discovered I had the cable trapped between the disc rack and the chassis - released and all eas fine!!

after i fully replaced the provided cable - it turns out that the same happened here - about 5 strands crushed
