Why is my RAM running single channel

After turning off the BIOS splash screen on my DS4 I noticed a msg saying memory operating in Single channel mode.

Sure enough when I checked in CPUZ it is indeed.

Why would this be and how can I get it to run dual again ?

Are both sticks showing? Are they in the right slots?

yep both sticks showing and they are in matched colour slots on the mobo as per the instructions (yep I read them )

Try... putting the RAM in different coloured slots (but next to each other). Some motherboards (like my MSI one in my media centre) are only dual channel when configured like this.

I am officially a total noobhead. When I reinstalled everything after some mods to my case I put the bloody sticks back in the wrong slots.... The coloured slots are not adjacent on the DS4.
As a matter of interest how much of a "real life" performance hit do you get in single channel ?

Certainly it is....I have that memory and its running in DC fine.

not sure on Intel but on AMD it's typically 5-8%.

Dual channel has really never offered much performance gain. Its almost always in single percentage figures, quite simply because memory bandwidth isn't a bottleneck in current systems (and some of the previous generations, actually)
Its more of a marketing gimmick to get people who cba to research things passing over their money
