    Dell SC440 with a Q6600

    Hi guys,

I've got a Dell Poweredge SC440 here running as my home development server. It's a truly brilliant little box for the money. I've got the opportunity to buy another SC440 cheap, and am considering using it as my workstation. I appreciate the video is locked at PCI-e 1x (grrr Dell), but the most graphics intensive thing I ever do on it is watch videos!

I want to get a decent CPU in there though. A Q6600 (G0) would be the ideal, but I'm not sure if the SC440 would recognise it. Furthermore, I'm a bit concerned that the 305W PSU would struggle to power the Q6600 along with the rest of the components. I read on another forum that the SC440 measures ~85W actual usage with 2 hard drives and a Pentium D chip, so there seems to be headroom?

    Any thoughts/advice from anyone?

    Thanks,

    Sam

If you haven't already, have a look at your model on their website to see what other CPUs are available for it, that will give you a clue

Dell PSUs are usually quite powerful for the rated wattage and can sustain decent loads, your problem is gonna be the motherboard before anything else.

Cheers Tetras - I gave up on this idea. Whilst I reckon the Q6600 will work, I don't think the G0 stepping would. So I'm just going to get a P5K and the rest of the goodies.

    Cheers

As a new system yes? Cos I am not sure a P5K would fit in a Dell case

Yes a brand new system - whilst the SC440 is a nice box, I think it's best suited for a server and not a workstation.

    Thanks again,

    Sam
