    Best 2500 Barton?

    Yo

Im in need for a CPU upgrade, and ive heard the 2500 Barton is exactly what i need. Its cheap, and ive heard it overclocks well. But i need a decent stepping, and some sites dont tell you what stepping the cpu is.

Any1 know where i can get a decent 2500 off the net?

    Cheers!

especially as all post week 40 are clock locked which won't help you if you are extreme overclocking.

Depends on the Supplier, they might or might not tell you. Its not the end of the world to get a clock locked barton, you just crank up the FSB, a 2500 will still turn into a 2.2ghz monster when upped to 200mhz fsb.

Just depends on how far you want to go with it. Most people are happy with 2.2ghz.

The locked bartons can be unlocked with most mobos anyway from what I've heard. I have a 1700+ myself so don't know for sure, but heard that atleast A7N8X could handle multiplyer change on the new bartons... Anyone else got more info on this?

Post week 40 Bartons are internally locked, like Intel cpu's. There seems to be a way of unlocking them with some motherboards (but not nforce2?). Look here:

    http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/guid...rtonwk43-1.htm

However, I can't pretend to really understand this article.

As for buying a used pre-week 40 Barton - they can be found on Ebay but are commanding high prices, naturally. I've been looking for a reasonably priced one for a while now, without success.

how exactly can u tell the week number?

after a bit of searching, i think u get it from the following:

AQXEA 0328MPMW <- is on my new cpu, so does that mean it is from week 28?

Any 2500 you get will most likeley go to 3200 speeds just by upping the FSB to 200, often not even extra voltage needed.

SO your getting a XP3200 for £60 odd. Bargain or what?

i brought one a few weeks before christmas from komplett and it was oem model and that's unlocked. just lucky, but it may be that it's oem and not boxed retail one. maybe that's the way forward?

With these locked 2500+ around, you should be looking at spending that extra money you're saving from purchasing a higher clocked CPU on decent overclocking parts like RAM and motherboard. The 2500+'s 11 multiplier is a perfect candidate for 210+ FSBs if your components can handle it.
